… I suspect that there are not many of these once-common items remaining in captivity.

Hawthorn is rare and expensive stuff, so look after it. It doesn't just grow on trees, you know.

I believe the loud and soft needles were of different thicknesses and therefore of different stiffness.

If you can manage with pyracantha thorns I have a copious supply, all you need to do is come and trim the hedge and you can have as many as you like. They certainly rip my hands to shreds when I have to do it

If memory serves, it contains the line 'and you sharpened fibre needles to make it soft again', which ties in with the stiffness idea. My brother had a needle sharpener like this one when we were young:

It worked very well – at least I imagine it did, as we had no needles. Nor a gramophone, come to think of it. Heigh-ho.

Just a quick mention:

Neil Brand's short series 'The Sound of Song' started its repeat on BBC4 this evening.

Episode_1 features some excellent clips of early gramophones, phonographs, etc.

It will presumably be on iPlayer.
