If memory serves, it contains the line 'and you sharpened fibre needles to make it soft again', which ties in with the stiffness idea. My brother had a needle sharpener like this one when we were young:

It worked very well – at least I imagine it did, as we had no needles. Nor a gramophone, come to think of it. Heigh-ho.
