Old gramophone

I have an old gramophone i am trying to restore. I have al the parts, but the "pickup head" is missing. I wonder if any could help me with some information and perhaps a drawing. ( It is a weary old gramophone with a big horn).

… the electrics shown here are an 'electrical equivalent' of the mechanical device; so you can erase them from a copy, to get an idea of the mechanics.

The diaphragm is made of aluminium or Mica and there is rubber at each side of diaphagm to hold on in the sound box.

Just an aside, a few years ago at our museum we had some children visiting from Australia. I had set up the portable gramophone, and left it running, a while later one of the kids came over to me and asked about the old gramophone, Mr Clark is that thing making music an old fashioned CD player? He had never seen a record player, old or new, but he reckoned it was a pretty cool thing because it didn't need a battery.

I will make it aware that the grammophone nail should be changed for every time the gramophone record is played. Grammophone needle wear down for every play and can destroy the gramophone record. 

Replace with new grammophone needle or use grammophone needle sharpener.

Some prefer to use bamboo, or Hawthorn pickles as a sylus rather that the steel ones, I think there is a tin of steel ones in a draw some where.

I seem to remember that the needles came in tins marked loud or soft. How did that work as a volume control?

The loud and soft may have something to do with the shape of the tip, my little box of needles says Medium Tone, under that is Regst Shape No 713852.

Hi.

Not really my thing but interesting,……..change the nail after every play ……………i bet just about every one on forum has heard of Edison ,,,not so many will remember the name Marie Killick ,sound engineer , patented the sapphire stylus mid 1940s and never really made a penny out of doing so or much credit either

78rpm records are made of a hard material which will wear any needle in contact with their surface. If the needle is as hard (or harder) than the record, the record will wear as well. If the needle is softer than the record, the majority (or all) of the wear will be to the needle. Needles can, and must be, replaced, but records can't be. So to preserve one's precious recordings it is important that record wear is kept to a minimum, or even better to reduce it to zero.

You could use a thick plastic, but you will not get any sound!

Mica sheet is the best and original, you need a certain stiffness but very low mass.

You can produce the diaphragm of aluminium sheet formed on spinning tools at lathe. I am not sure how thick it will be. It must be audible from grammophone.
