Nice plastic cover for a length of metal.

I'm trying to find something I saw a while ago. It's a plastic cover for made from plastic, I want it to fit on a piece of 5mm rod. I think it was like heat shrink tubing but with a solid end. Black with a shiny finish.

Any ideas?!

You can get heat shrink and cold shrink end caps for sealing cable ends but I'm guessing you want something a little thicker and ordinary ferrules should fit the bill either a tight stretch fit or a dab of adhesive. **LINK**

it sounds more like a plastic coating melted on.

it comes as a powder and you heat the metal and dip it in the powder.

I cant remember the name offhand but try google for plastic coating .

I,ll look tomorrow, I'm too tired now.

PVC end caps are readily available but whether they will be suitable will depend on how long your need to be.

I have used PVC caps that look just like the ones in this link. I collected them ages ago as they were supplied as dust caps on some pneumatic components. They were a snug fit on 5mm rod and about 15mm long.

Or, depending on your application, you could make end caps from Sugru and cover the length with heatshrink?

It's quite hard to get a good finish with Sugru, much patience and a wet finger was needed to do THIS repair.

I think it would work well if you can find a way to mould it, any suggestions for a release agent?

There is an adhesive heat shrink tubing which i use regularly for making plugs waterproof. This will seal at the ends though you will not get a rounded seal.

There are lots of these sort of caps used in industry for a particular product initially that then get used elsewhere. For example the RF connectors in cable TV street cabinets have plastic caps when new which fit a 10mm rod. The SMA type of RF connector used in other equipment used one for1/4 inch.. SMB connectors will be smaller at 3mm. I used to bin loads of them.
So you need to thnk of a mass produced component that is 5mm and needs a protective cap. Then find who is using them and chucking away the end caps. I can only think of knitting needles .
