I remember a thread that Neil did, comparing 4 or 5 digital calipers, maybe a year or two ago. I now cannot find it. Can anyone help?

I know there was a similar article in MEW maybe 5 years ago, but it is the forum thread that I would like to find.

      Andrew.

Reading through Neil's old post I noted Bill Phinn mentioned carbide jaws on his Mitutoyo. I quite fancy another DVC, as my old Linear one is getting on a bit. Despite concerns about worn jaws I'll maybe take a chance on a second hand Mitutoyo if I can find one local that I can see before buying. Is there a model number for the carbide jaw version or are they all the same?

Thank you Jason, just the job. I must have put in a variety of search "words" but didn't hit the jackpot. Mind you the search engine on Ebay is even worse.

              Andrew.

                Hello Jason,

I did find the thread that you linked to. It certainly wasn't the one I was looking for. That thread was far more detailed, could be that I have it confused with the original MEW article, although I don't appear to have that copy of MEW.

                Thanks anyway,

                Andrew.

Well this is topical – my old long serving Mitutoyo calipers have just this morning finally given up the ghost – only put a new battery in yesterday. I don't use them for accurate measurement but they do get constant daily useage.

I looked on Ebay but with an average price of under a tenner in the first xxx I looked at I came on here to see if there was anything better to be recommended. This pair must have lasted well over thirty years – the next don't need to as I won't be around by then but I would like something decent but not at Mitu prices

I'll check out Neil's post but any recommendations?

                  Regards – Ramon

Just to remind people that the "search" facility that you can use by entering keywords into the boxes at the top of the thread is not fit for purpose. But if you go to the homepage and scroll down you can find a Google custom search box which works much better! I suspect that's the one that Jason entered those keywords in.

I've just bought some of M&W budget range and they seem very good for the money.

Carbon fiber framed are available.. Around Fiver each.

Can't say I've experienced them but frames made of low thermal and drill able material has potential of adding simple direct measurement to various axis .

I have a cheap carbon fiber digital caliper. I use it all the time but I do note that the accuracy is only 2 digits imperial instead of the 3 digits of the stainless steel one. Quick measurement to get an idea of the size, the carbon fiber framed one works fine. If I need more precision the stainless steel one comes out.
