Industrial bed wipers are rubber as their function is to wipe off coolant and swarf as the saddle travels, lubrication is fed through the saddle, so two separate systems. Felt can be oil filled but can also retain small swarf particles, leather can be soaked in oil to a degree and is probably less prone to swarf retention. Either will do the job, but I think neither is ideal.

Well thanks for that ,in fact l do have some rubber that l could make the wiper from, will give that ago,but as l said the leather ones on the southbend work great, myford just sell the felt ones still.

More modern machines might have rubber wipers but traditionally they are mostly felt for all sizes of lathe.

These felts are still available for Myford 7s.

I understand that you can make your own and that chiropody felt ,available on the web, is a good material to use.

If you decide to make them yourself, here are the dimensions you require. You’ll have to scroll down 3 or 4 posts to see the drawing. I think thats valid for both ML7 and S7 lathes.

Home and workshop machinery sell the proper thing, described as bridge or rifle type, look on their website, I believe they are the remaining stock from the Myford factory. Why bother wasting time making some when the correct thing is available off the shelf?
