Hi

I am currently repairing a fibreglass tank for my motorcycle. It originally had a right angled pipe at the front to act as a breather. This had long since been torn off and needs replacing as all I have now is a rough hole where it once was. I need to make a tube/pipe that comes out of the hole and then turns 90 degrees. it needs to be about 5mm in diameter. About 10mm coming straight out of tank, then the bend then about another 10mm in length. What material would be easy to bend and suitable for this application.

Aluminium bonds well to glass fibre.

Are you going to line the tank against ethanol?

Hi Thanks for guidance. Ref ethanol I have just received a can of sealer from Hitchcocks motorcycles which I trust will work. Had planned to seal the thing this weekend but then realised I had the 'breather pipe' problem to solve before I started- hence the post. Thanks again Keith MM

Garages use either copper or cupronickel ( kunifer) tubing 3/16 diameter( so close to 5mm that it doubles up) to make up brake pipes. A proper car repairing garage will sell you a small length for next to nothing. Being copper based it's easy to bend and also very easy to anneal. You could roughen up the end with a pair of pliers or similar, so it will bond well to the fibreglass.

There won't be a lot of support for the tube if you simply poke a hole in the tank and seal it with glass fibre, I used to silver solder a washer to the tube and bed this to the tank. Never had one fall out! Copper should be OK for this.
