I'm looking to buy a new motor for my Fortis ,how many poles ,I believe higher number of poles equates to more torque . Seeing as the motor I have just now goes to 1425rpm I'm not sure what to get ? Anyone help out ?

The speed of the motor is related to the number of poles, 2 pole = 2800 RPM, 4 pole = 1400 RPM, 6 pole = 960 RPM. (speeds approx). Generally best to stick with the same type of motor the makers fitted..

Power is proportional to torque multiplied by rpm.

So halving the speed requires double the torque for a given power output. Motor speeds are roughly proportional to the frequency supply for induction motors, so the speeds quoted above are applicable to 50Hz supplies, but not for our friends 'across the pond' with 60Hz leccy.

Sean, depending on your budget i would go for a 3ph motor(dual voltage ) and inverter ,you wouldnt regret it, plus you have the advantage of complete speed control and even above the rated speed for occasional use.

3 ph motors can often be picked up very cheaply on ebay as well as suitable used inverters. If your lucky you could get both for the price of a new 1ph motor.
