Motor bike starter motor

These are 12 volt starter motors for quad bikes and motor scooters available on #-bay from $25 each. They are new units with a reduction gearbox. Has anyone used them in any projects ? Not sure or the output speed. Could be a better alternative than car windscreen wiper motors for milling machine/lathe power feeds, electric locos, etc.

Starter motors are series wound with a high starting torque and are of intermittent rating. Stick with the windscreen wiper motor, and some of them are designed to work in one direction only. Window up and down are designed to work both ways.John

Hi Paul,
I suspect that these are series (universal) wound motors like car starter motors. It would be more difficult to control the speed than with a permanent magnet motor. You would probably have to add some form of speed sensor. I also don't know how reliable they would be running for longer periods than they were designed for. I had actualy thought of buying one of these for starting a generator.

These motors are designed to run for a few seconds at a time only, with a pulley and belt they make good starters for IC engines in model boats.

Use an old Lucas windscreen wiper motor, it will rotate in either direction. You can open it up and put in an extended shaft on the worm wheel for a sprocket/gear, or pulley.
