Can Loctite be applied after blueing some small parts in mild steel. I've searched the internet but cant find a answer to this.

That's an interesting question, Bob ; and I suspect this could turn into another long-running thread.

          Here's my personal view:

I'm assuming that by 'Loctite' you mean one of their wide selection of anaerobic retainers or thread-lockers.

[whinge-mode] Henkel now markets so many products under the 'Loctite' name that the word no longer carries its original implicit definition. [/whinge-mode]

          • The Loctite anaerobics, athough sometimes described as adhesives, work mainly by gap-filling.
          • The locking action is largely due to shape-distortion at the microscopic level
          • Therefore: Yes they can certainly be applied to blued mild steel, and will work as designed.
          • I doubt, however, if Henkel would guarantee the resulting performance.

Blueing it's self will not effect loctite as long as you degrease the parts well. I always give the glue area a scrub with a piece of scouring pad as well if it dosn't show after assembly.

It will work near on the same as if bare steel.
Blueing is Rusting or chemical blacking, just a rust.

It would perhaps be more helpful, Jon, to say that blueing is an adherent coating of iron oxide, and to leave the term 'rust' for the well known orange-brown mixture of iron oxides which is non adherent.

I am not trying to qualify (again) for the nit-pickers award, but to ensure that no-one gets the impression that if Loctite anaerobic stuff works on blued, or blacked, steel it will also work just as well on rusty steel. However tightly you stick something to rust, it is still rust and is a loose material.

Unless I have got it all wrong (again) …

                Cheers, Tim

Blackings merely a form of one oxide coating and being helpful theres 16 variations of the term oxide therefore meaningless when its commonly known as blueing, rusting, blacking, cold blacking and browning.

Have a read up of your books again on rust or rusting, (we used to have a saying a little knowledge is dangerous) people have been using it for centuries on high end stuff like £130k where anything associated with less than perfection is not good enough.
As it happens just given my mate 4 parts today for blacking who might just happen to pop up on here.

I have been using Loctite Blue on gun screws for decades. Excellent performance and no adverse effects on blued neighboring surfaces. Of course degreasing is a given.
