Imlec 50

Hi All,

Having seen the 'imlec 50' in model engineer. I think this must be a mistake, the first imlec was in 1969, and has been held every year. Except, 2001 when it was cancelled due to a foot and mouth outbrake. Imlec 2018, must be the 49th and the 50th will be in 2019.

Some one, has got it wrong, might be me!

Unlike Birthdays, we do count the frst one as number one, therefore the fiftieth will be 2018. 2019 would be the 51st.

2019 would be the fiftieth 'anniversary' perhaps.

I had the same dilema at first but then thought about it…

I can't comment, but I used to organise International Dawn Chorus Day. Every year I would argue with the same journalist who insisted we were inflating the year by one. He couldn't get his head around the idea that an event 'ten years old' has to have happened eleven times (think about it).

I will have to agree to disagree on this one then, 2018 is neither the 50th anniversary or the 50th imlec, there will only have been 49imlecs in 2018.

I shall still look forward to the next two events.

Okay. Which year was the second IMLEC?
Which year was the third IMLEC?

If 1969 was the first, then
1970 was the second
1971 was the third
1972 was the fourth
1973 was the fifth
1974 was the sixth
1975 was the seventh
1976 was the eighth
1977 was the ninth
1978 was the tenth
…
2018 is the fiftieth IMLEC

2019 is arguably the fiftieth anniversary inasmuch as 1970 was the first anniversary.

Or is it me …?

Yes, 1969 was the first and 1970 was the second.

So, following your list, 1978 was the tenth and 1998 was the thirtieth.

However, as Paul rightly said, 2001 was cancelled due to foot & mouth.

Therefore 2009 was the fortieth and 2019 will be the fiftieth.

Hopefully I've got that right…

That is exactly how I read it, as 2001 never took place, so the 50th imlec will be 2019. It will also be the 50th anniversary of the first imlec.

and there was an event in 2001 I believe… but it wasn't 'officially' recorded.

Indeed, Guildford who were down to hold the original event, instead ran an Open Locomotive Efficiency Competition at Stoke Park in August.

I suspect the cancellation of the 'official event' was part of the general panic that closed down many events that actually had no connection with cattle and posed no risk…

Hi Diane,

There was no Official imlec in 2001, there was an efficiency trials held by gmes called 'omlec', we held it a few times. It had no connection with imlec. I don't feel any further comment from me is really needed. It is what it is, the main thing is that imlec keeps on being taken on.
