Dave. I wasn’t originally going to bother about screw cutting and just use taps and dies,  but as they say “the devil makes work for idle hands” at the moment I’m just exercising my brain to see it is at all possible.  It might never happen.

Not sure why I tried doing it via the rack, sort of forgot about using a lead screw, which is a better idea.

I can still use part of my gear design to make a powered carriage and cross slide via an electric motor mounted at the tail stock end. Then i can use a lead screw and mount the change gears at the head stock end for thread cutting. All I need to do then is make a clamping mechanism at the apron to grip the lead screw.

As with most home made projects,  will it ever be finished ? I’ll always find something more I can try to add to it.

      Thanks for the feedback, Noel.

Turn the gearbox round so that the drive pullies can go in the middle if the spindle.

(>Better still get rid of it altogether and use cone pullies and a countershaft on the motor<)

Then use the standard ‘banjo’ arrangement to transmit drive to leadscrew.

You think it,s difficult getting stuff where you are ???

You should try getting ANYTHING down here in the Sunny South East !

Still, we do our best, such as it is .

Eventually got my lathe running and I’m very pleased with it. Less than 0.01mm runout at the chuck. Also got a splash back made. Next step is to continue with the quick change gearbox and power feed. ( ignore the temporary wiring)

RPM via gears is 144 – 625. Using VFD to speed up and slow down motor, 14 – 1500.

            Short video showing runout.  https://youtu.be/42Oel4Glt60?si=DE4Mb5Fg6isP1a4U

Woo hoo, gold medal for best home-made lathe!

I see no lead-screw though, is there more to come?  Whatever, I’m impressed!

                🙂

Looks like a perfect candidate for an ELS fitment.

Yes Dave, powered carriage in the works. 👍

                    Eventually got the tailstock finished.
The bed i was given came with a tailstock of sorts. It had very little adjustment and only accepted a dead center.

I picked up an old 2mt quill (would have liked something a bit bigger but it will have to do) and welded a lead screw nut to the end.

Next up i needed to make up a housing to hold the bearings and handle.

A bit of lead screws was machined down to make an ejection pin for arbour and to fit the bearings and hand wheel.

This was attached with three cap head bolts.

Got a keyway machined into the quill to stop it from rotating, secured with a thumbscrew.

And that’s about it for now, more to come !

Thank you,  when I put my mind to something I rarely give up until it’s the best I can possibly make it.

Like Noel, I thought that you were on a hiding to nowhere, but have proved wrong.

You are making a good job of it

Should be quite a machine when you’ve finished
