Hello Please can some one confirm some thing i see on this site, David Sutton 2 had got a ML2 Myford lathe and was asking about gear cogs? and that John stevenson told him that ML7 gear cogs would fit if he drilled the hole for the locking pin,

This was good to hear because I have got a ML3 Myford lathe and would like to get more therad cutting cogs.

Can any one tall me if the chuck back plate from a ML7 would fit a ML3 lathe ?

      Thank you alll

      Great site all

          Don't think so.

          I'm sure a ML3 has an 1" thread, no register and the ML7 has a 1 1/8" thread with 1 1/4" register.

I know the info on the ML7 is correct but not certain abut the ML3, perhaps a owner / user can comment ?

            Hello Keith,

I used to own an ML4 and that had a nose thread of 1 and 1/8 inch Whitworth with a register of the same diameter behind it. I upgraded it to take ML7 nose hardware with a simple sleeve bonded to the old register and then turned down to 1.250 inches as the new register. The turning was done in situ after the Loctite bonding had set.

I think both the ML3 and ML4 had the same nose detail, the earlier ML1 and 2 lathes had threads of 7/8 inch Whitworth form and matching register diameters; they too can be upgraded but a double threaded sleeve has to be made and fitted to do so. I know that to be true, having just done one for another owner.

Measure the nose thread on your lathe to see what you have.

            Regards
            Brian

Some years ago, made a couple of replacement gears for a friend's ML3 (or was it a 4?) Used the same cutter as for gears for my ML7 .

My pal had damaged his gears by engaging Back Gear to lock the spindle while he clouted the chuck to unscrew it. The small amount of metal between the bore and the drive pin fractured, so DON 'T follow his example.

And the thread on the spindle nose is not the same as the ML7, it is smaller.
