Grinding wheels

Hi all,

I have been given a Kamasa 506 CBG bench grinder. The wheels that came with it ( 1 med, 1 fine) are okay but I seem to have more stone dust than metal dust! I presume they must be at the cheaper end of the scale.

I only have a small workshop, but I do have an SC3 lathe and a bench drill, (which, I wish in hindsight, I had bought a small mill instead!) and I do not want my tools, etc, covered in dust!

What are my best options for wheels to keep the dust to a minimum?

I have not got around yet to tool making/sharpening, But it will not be too long, I hope. So, most of the work is general purpose, any suggestions?

Mmmm, see what you mean about 'bit spendy', Perhaps later when I get a bit more involved with the hobby. Us pensioners have to be a bit careful with the pennies

A decent engineers suppliers like Cromwell or Buck and Hickman should be able to supply good quality wheels.

It is more likely that the grade is wrong for what you are sharpening. See if you can get the code off the label (plenty of sites on the web explain the codes) and get something better suited to your needs.

Thanks for the suppliers, Vic. I'll look them up on the web.

And, I think you could well be right, Neil, I'm not sure where the grinder came from but I don't think it was used for precision work! Most probably from a garage or somesuch. But I'm grateful for it anyway, I don't like turning anything away that's free.

Hi Colin,

The "soft" wheels on your grinder aren't green are they? I they are then they are for sharpening tungsten carbide tooling, and are not cheap.

No, they are the usual grey. I've yet to have a look at the label's, but I'm sure they are not going to be anything special!

I have ordered a couple of wheels from ARC, plus some other bits and bobs, and I have an apology to give to Neil. It wasn't until I had placed the order that I saw his book on the mini-lathe. By that time I had already ordered the one by David Fenner!! Next time I order, Neil……..!
