Evening all. I've spent today stripping down the gearset on my Goodwin model makers' lathe. I am now at the point of removing the spindle and front gearshaft. However, I am unsure how to proceed. From watching videos of spindle removals on other lathes I believe that it is usual to tap the spindle out from left to right, with the spindle coming out of the chuck end. But I can't be sure, since Goodwins are rare and information on how to rebuild them is even rarer! I thought I would pick the brains of more knowledgeable folk, since although I am mechanically competent, I'd really like to be sure what I'm doing before I start hitting a 100-year-old lathe with a rubber mallet. Photos of the front shaft and spindle, along with the bronze taper bearings, can be found in my album "Goodwin "Progress" Stripdown And Rebuild". Any help appreciated. Thanks.
