Morning all, can anyone point me in the direction of a supplier of flat spring steel? I'm looking for a piece about 600mm x 20mm x 2mm. I can find really thin stuff but none in the size I require.

      Thanks in advance. Mark P.

I don't know what it is for, but I have cut bits out of an old wood saw. Use a thin cutting disc in an angle grinder.

Thanks Gorden, never thought about that, I've got a few of those.

It depends on the specific application but O1 (sometimes listed as ground flat stock or gauge plate) may well be perfectly suitable and you can get it all sorts of places in small amounts. 2mm would be quite a thick saw?

I've got some CS70 if you can't find anything else. You usually have to buy that in very large quantities.

Just for interest, just measured an old saw and it's 2.1 mm thick. This is (was) a proper saw, 2 handed crosscut.

Well a saw it is then Gordon, thanks for the offer Jack. I've got a few old ones and they always turn up a boot fairs.

                  Thanks Mark P.

Reeves list 3/4" x 13swg (2.3mm) in 2ft lengths which is annealed for easy working.

You could probably find some in the edge of an old mattress – it will be very high quality spring steel as it has to take an edge bend after it was made.

I guess I was thinking of the throw-away hardpoints. Circular saw blades are thick as well and should be good for springs. TCT blades may be a gamble.

Beware some sources of second hand metal – it can have fatigue cracks that you can't see. Back of an old hand saw should be completely safe though.

If you have a proper gunsmith in your area (rather than a gun salesman) ask him where he gets his steel for making v-springs. Also, just a thought, but could you use a steel ruler?

Mark, I have some 16G, which equates to 1.5mm if that is any good to you.

I was not kidding about mattress edge strip, I used to work at a spot that made the stuff and it was quite demanding to make. The other thing we made (among a lot of other products) was "bra stay wire" which is used for – support in women's under wired bra's. It may be useful to remember that they have wire in them as this is also very high quality material. The stay wire is often oval in shape and coated in plastic but also to be found in round edged flats. They are usually in the range of a couple of mm wide by a mm or so thick (with the plastic coating removed.
