Fitting DRO to Warco GH1224 Lathe

Hi all,

I have just purchased a 2 axis DRO from the Allendale Group (M-DRO) and wondered if anyone had installed one on a Warco GH 1224 or similar

are there any pitfalls with regard to best location for mounting them

It should arrive tomorrow so will begin to install it over the weekend hopefully

Hi Trevor,

I fitted a 2 axis DRO to my Warco 1327 lathe (same as a BH900) last year, and found it surprisingly easy.

I fitted the cross slide scale to the right of the carriage so that it didn't interfere with the headstock end. It does obscure the carriage lock a bit, but it's easy enough to extend the screw and fit a bar to it.

All in it took me about 5 hours to fit, and I don't rush!

Thanks for that I guess that fitting it that side on the cross slide also keeps it clear of the travelling steady mounting

True, although I've yet to use the travelling steady!

I had a 2 axis DRO to fit to my S7 as a gift from my wife at Christmas. I had been " Out of Service " (courtesy of the NHS!) for a while but am now looking at fitting the kit. I too think that it will be on the RHS of the cross slide. A further complication is that I have a taper turning attachment fitted to the back of the bed – I need to turn a couple of tapered connecting rods for a part completed Trapezium Connecting Rod engine so I had better do those first. Whilst I was "Out of service" the workshop was not heated but I now have an oil filled radiator running full time and also a de-humidifier. Quite a bit of moisture was extracted at first but it is now down to about a teaspoonful a day. Time to crack on with the projects methinks! ( Hmmm I might well need the travelling steady for those connecting rods)

My Chester 12×36 GH is very similar to the GH 1224. I fitted a 2-axis DRO with the cross-slide scale on the RH of the saddle because on the LH it's very vulnerable to damage and prohibits use of the steady. There are still problems on the RHS though – it blocks the cross-slide locking screw, and compromises use of the saddle lock. The following pictures shows how I solved the problems.

that's really useful, what about along the main axis are there any issues?

How have you run the cables in order to keep them from snagging
