I want an MT2 to MT2 extension socket for the head of my wood turning lathe but have only seen tanged versions. I need a threaded end for a drawbar, can you buy them?

In over 60 years around metalworking I have never seen an extension socket without a tang. You could cut the tang off, drill and tap for drawbar threads. How will the tool be retained in the socket?

Could you drill a clearance hole through the extension and use an extended drawbar to pull the tool and extension together into the lathe? An extended drawbar should be easy to make.

The extension then would have no extraction facility

You could get around that by threading a bolt through the extension into the tool and giving the head a smart tap – or bumping it against a solid object like a vise.

You'd have to be careful drilling a clearance hole through the extension, mind. You'd probably want to drill from the male taper end otherwise you'd be trying to open up a tang slot into a bore, buried at the bottom of the taper cavity…

Are they soft enough to do this?
