      Hi There,

Probably some of you out there have been following the thread for the Stringer EW Lathe.

My estimation of how many of his designs were actually made is probably 2.

I thought that it might be fun to try and find this out.

So if anybody knows where there are any of Martins constructed designs please let us know.

      Alan

          Hi Martin Cleeve bloodhounds,

I enclose a copy of Martins design for the EW slow feed, Are you sure that you haven't overlooked this refugee from a clock factory.

There must be one somewhere so let's bring it to ground otherwise I'm just going to have to make one!

              Ady1, EWers and bloodhounds,

              Yes,

Martin was a very prolific engineer, his designs were published in the ME for years in the fifties and sixties.

This hunt is for his actual constructed designs for the EW lathe, such as the slow feed, which I featured in my last posting, although examples for the Myford lathe are also of interest.

Have you had a look at the on going thread "Sringer EW lathe".

              Alan

                Martin cleeve bloodhounds,

So far there have been no sightings reported for Martin's constructed accessories.

I think that we have to examine the reason for this.

We all buy these expensive magazines where glamourous projects are presented to us with super photos and of course we would all like to make them and duly follow all the episodes and then follow the next project etc. etc.

This is probably the same for all people men and women, Knitting, Classic Cars, locos, in fact everything under the sun.

I think that the reality is that although we enjoy reading about the endeavours of others, there is never enough time for us to make the items because we would rather watch the telly or go down the pub, whatever!

What I intend to do over the winter is to construct Martin's EW gearbox and put it to the test.

Don't forget to look out for any of Martin's constructed designs, we would all like to see some.

                    Martin Cleeve Bloodhounds,

I have bought in all the parts necessary to re-create Martin's slow speed gearbox. The metal cost me a fiver. The two used Myford gears cost £18 from fleabay and the three remaining gears I bought from HPC at the whopping price of £66.

Looking at the gears, the difference in thickness and diametric pitch does not auger a harmonious looking gearbox!

I will have to change the design slightly as there is no need for a three speed pulley on the input shaft which will now have a single pulley, that is enough to prove the design.

When martin designed the gearbox he made all the gears for it himself and in his article he then gives a list of gears that could be purchased from retail outlets. See copes of the articles which I will add to my photo albums. What this means is that the reader wil have to modify the design hiself as the bores of the bought gears differ from those that Martin made.

                    Alan
