EN16T help

I don't suppose anyone has a spare length of 80mm diameter EN16T ( or similar ) that they would like to sell ? I need to make 2 new steering arms for my TVR and need either two pieces approx 200mm long or one piece 400mm long. Alternatively if anyone can point me in the direction of somewhere that will sell small quantities or half lengths.

West Yorks Steel have just quoted me ?141.60 + delivery for 400mm of 80mm EN16S I wonder if the S stands for Silver cos at that price it must be bloody silver plated. How hard can it be to buy steel in small quantities at sensible money.

Out of interest I checked prices on Parkersteel. A standard length (~3m) of 80mm diameter EN16T was about £213, a cut length of 400mm was £31.77p, both plus VAT. The downside is that Parkersteel charge delivery for orders below £100, which is an eye-watering £35. I usually lump items together and order once a year. Unless of course I need to order for work in which case the client pays the delivery and doesn't mind if I sneak a few 'homers' onto the order.

My supplier is quoting £222 plus VAT for ~3m, but in all fairness they only charge £8.50 delivery, plus VAT.

Just noticed you asked for EN16T and West Yorks quoted for EN16S which is the annealed version. Mind you if you are heat treating after manufacture [ recommended then S grade will be fine.

Yeah, it gives me a good margin for error ……….actually the steering arms are the bits bolted to the hubs that the track rod ends bolt to, i need to make a pair of these. John are you saying it would be better to heat treat EN16T or just S? i was hoping to avoid heat treatment. West Yorks quoted on S because that was all they had in stock. The prices quoted above are around what i had expected, i would happily buy half a length and keep the rest for stock at that sort of price…….why are some suppliers so greedy.

If you are buying from an industrial supplier they will be geared up to supply in bulk, by the standard length. The stores will be run by crane and forklift, and the delivery will be by big truck. All expensive to run. Anything else also needs extra time and effort, and who wants a standard length which has a bit missing so they cannot get their standard number of parts from it?

Just pop down to National Rail and ask them for six inches of railway line, delivered …

I fully understand that Tim, but did you miss the post above regarding Parker Steel ? i'm sure their overheads are inline with West Yorkshire Steel yet they only want £32 + vat for 400mm as opposed to £142 + vat, if they were closer i would be heading down there now to collect. We all like to make a profit and i don't begrudge anyone a living, but some outfits simply take the piss.

Although Parkersteel are based in Canterbury they have a warehouse near Cambridge, which is what I use.

Hi Alan,
Schimitar steel show that they stock EN16T up to 3" dia. which may be large enough. You would have to phone them for a price. I do not know if they are near enough to you as you have not filled in your profile.

Thanks Andrew, unfortunately i'm in Leeds so neither location is convenient for collection. However if nothing turns up locally i might just order half a length from them to make the order over £100. May i ask how you checked the price with Parker steel, is there an online facility anyone can access or is it just for account holders?

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated. I tried Steel Express, but two E24T billets worked out at £130 + delivery and Vat and was probably overkill for my needs. Tried metal Supermarket in Leeds and have been quoted £67 + vat for 80 mm x 500mm EN16T round bar. Thought that was fair enough so am collecting on Wednesday.

I use High Peak Steels for my steel alloy supplies and have found them to be very reasonable and also deliver in and around the Manchester area at reasonable cost. I do have an account with them.

I used to get my steels from West Yorkshire but they more or less told me they only supplied the trade and wouldn't deal in small quantities. For small quantities sometimes I use One Stop Metals at Trafford Park. They are expensive but conveniently close to home.
