Elmers #24 Beam engine – Can anyone help with question about the cylinder ?

Hi All,

Just attempting the cylinder for Elmers no 24 beam engine but have a query about the bores.I see that the main bore is 1 1/32 long but the smaller bore seems to go right through the length of the block and hence has no bottom – is ths correct or am i missing something ?

I've know i've posted no drawings but am hoping someone has built this engine before and perhaps are aware of the bore i'm mentioning ……

Not made it but it certainly looks like the valve bore goes all the way through, presumably sealed when its fixed to the bed.

Hi Chris and Jason,

On the no. 24 beam, the valve bore is all the way through the block. The piston valve is inside admission, only the centre part of the valve bore between the two valve pistons sees pressurised steam/air. The top and bottom ends vent exhaust steam out to atmosphere as the valve piston uncovers the cylinder ports as it moves back toward centre of stroke. On the 24 beam, there are also two small exhaust holes drilled into the side of the valve bore as well, to ensure a clear exhaust path. The valve bore bottom does not need to be sealed to the base during assembly.
