      Hi,

New member here, looking for some advice on an Elliot Progress no 1 Mk 2 benchtop pillar drill I am working on (not a "restoration", I just want it to function properly). There are two issues which may or may not be related:

1: The depth stop bracket is not an original part, I'm fairly sure. It's ID is about a 16th larger than the quill OD. Previous owner had packed it with some aluminium shims, and that worked fine. However, from looking at pictures of other drills, this part should have a grease nipple which aligns with the hole on the front of the quill. I may drill and tap this mystery part to take a grease nipple, as a quick fix. Would be useful to see closeup pictures on an original part for reference.

2: The spindle (with bearing assembly) has about a half inch of vertical play inside the quill. I can't believe this is intentional, so I suppose either (1) there is a spacer missing from the bearing assembly, or (2) the original depth stop bracket was shaped to as to fit around the bottom of the quill and prevent this. Or I am missing something.

Can anyone with the same model of drill please clarify these points? In particular I'd like to know how the depth stop bracket fits around the bottom of the quill, and whether there is vertical play in the spindle.

I have photos but couldn't attach them without making the post too big to send!

      Thanks in advance!

      Neil

Sorry if it is stating the obvious, but you could make two posts?

Usual procedure, for pics, is to load them to an album (instructions how to do that on the forum somewhere) and use those pics in your postings.
