Drummond M Tailstock Disassembly

Hi all,

I am about to post an 'About me" post in the correct section, but I wonder if anyone can help with disassembling the Drummond M tail stock?

I have all the parts striped off, but cannot get the two castings apart. I have unscrewed the square headed lateral adjuster until it has slipped off the thread inside, but the two castings are still together firm. The screw above it cannot come out until the square headed adjuster has and the only other part left is a rod to the underside of the lower base, which I cannot extract.

I am doing a middle of the road restoration and I really need to get them apart as there has been a lot of debris (mainly brass swarf) entering between the two surfaces and it does not operate smoothly.

Any suggestions?

It's about 5 years since I took this one to bits… but it may help

I think they needed to be dinked apart because the workmanship is so good

By dinked, do you mean gently tapped? They feel quite tight, but I can check again tomorrow.

Really helpful photos – I am a bit concerned the metal pin at the base needs to come out… which I think I will struggle to do.

The metal pin is fine, it's a tight fit only and the vehicle by which the two halves move in opposite directions

I modded my other tailstock with a hex bolt to make adjustments easier by using an allen key

The two sections can be tapped apart no problem once the hex bolt part is removed, I think it was a big cheese head screw originally

The even BIGGER screw above it is simply to keep the hex bolt from moving about(falling out), so the hex bolt can manipulate the upper tailstock section back and forwards on the lower section via the pin in the lower section

If you can, extract the two vertical studs which are driven into the lower casting

Then things are even easier

Double up the nuts, and unscrew the stud by using a spanner on the lower nut

Then it's a case of… dink dink dink dink…

The metal pin is driven into the hole , it quite literally hammers into that hole and does nothing else except sit there and is a simple "leadscrew nut" in the lower casting which facilitates the movement of the upper casting

After all these years I actually found the original bits… holy smoke.

Its a square head screw and a metal pin

So get the square headed screw out, then get the studs out (removing studs is optional but makes things easier), then you can safely part your two castings
