Many years ago I worked for an scientific instrument maker. Ball ended screws were used to level the bases of surveying instruments, these got damaged occasionally and were trued up in a lathe with a hand held tubular tool, the hole slightly smaller than the ball and the tool ground flat across the front. The tool cut slowly (negative rake) and produced a very fine finish.
Not much good for forming a ball from scratch but if you use the incremental method to form the ball, would probably give a nice finish.
