Many years ago I worked for an scientific instrument maker. Ball ended screws were used to level the bases of surveying instruments, these got damaged occasionally and were trued up in a lathe with a hand held tubular tool, the hole slightly smaller than the ball and the tool ground flat across the front. The tool cut slowly (negative rake) and produced a very fine finish.

Not much good for forming a ball from scratch but if you use the incremental method to form the ball, would probably give a nice finish.

Just a heads up. Cromwell tools have 14mm & 18mm short (25mm) rota broach cutters for sale at 78p & 89p respectively, inclusive of vat. Free postage on orders of £20. Their silver steel is a good price as well.

Ian, don't suppose you have a link for them do you?

Can't see them on their site anywhere, and I'll be in Sheffield tomorrow.

          Thanks Bill

mmm, they were here but looks like the offer has finished !

            **LINK**

Maybe worth calling in to their shop to see if they have any as this was a online offer.

I wonder if I will get mine?

Your correct Bill, I received an email from Cromwell tools

"We are very sorry, but we made a mistake with our pricing updates over the weekend which has impacted your order"

I just need to cancel the order and get a refund now!!

                  Bad luck – mine arrived yesterday . . . .

Ordered a few other cheap bits and pieces as well.

                  Great service smiley
