Drill chucks

Hi Guys

Looking for advise in drill chucks

I have new (to me) tom senior milling machine, it did not come with a drill chuck.

I was wondering what make/quality to go for???

I do have quite a few jacobs drill chucks that come with a myford super 7 that I also own (its not up and running yet)

but the jaws could really do with being replaced and they are all on MT2 knock out arobs, not on a MT2 draw bar arbour that I need,

yes I could buy a new arbor, bont want the hassel of changing them every time, and like I said, the jaws are all prity worn.

so please point me in the write direction for a new drill chuck

I was thinking more on the lines of a 5mm to 25mm for the milling machine.

Hi Piero,

The best drill chuck I have had was a Röhm, it has seen much use and the jaws are beginning to show sign of wear. Recently I got a keyless drill chuck as a present (I haven't found any brand name, it may have been from Chronos), so far I am very pleased with it.

Hi Piero,

If i am reading you right you want to hold parallel shank cutters from 5-25mm. If this is so, then i would launch straight in and get a half decent ER32 or even ER40 collet chuck and collet set.

I would then go for something like a decent used 0-3/8" Cardinal chuck and mount it on a parallel shank short arbor. You can then hold it in the relevant collet without having to remove your collet chuck all the time. This arrangement will cover much of your needs ( but not all ) if you have sufficient room on your Z axis.

AS to the second reply,

I am looking to hold drill bits, I have a ER32 chuck and collets.

and its corisponding arbour.

I not sure is I should go keyless or not,

I am guessing most of my drilling WONT be with small size drill bits

For drilling you don't need a draw bar. Most of my drill chucks are Jacobs 34, 1/16" to 1/2", although they struggle to hold 1/16". I have the Rexon keyed chuck that came with my milling machine, and another no mame these two go to 5/8", so half a dozen keyed chucks, all on Jacobs #6 taper, some with 2 MT, and others with 3 MT.

I have only used cheaper keyless drill chucks and found that they can score the drill shank because they grip with a ball bearing arrangement

I have also found some dirt cheap ones can be pretty good, item 351816996503 on a well known site for example was a very pleasing tailstock replacement unit when the original wore out

Alternatively you can pay top dollar for a decent one from the usual suspects

Very interesting regarding keyless chucks using ball bearings

My milling machine NEEDS a draw bar to both tighten and lossen the morse tapper 2,

the draw bar is knocked to push the morse tapper out of my milling head

If your mill doesn't have a cross hole in the quill for a taper pin, then all you need is a suitable bar to put down the quill to knock out the drill chuck. At most a light tap with a soft hammer on the chuck nose will hold it in, if not you have a problem with the taper, either on the drill, or on the drill it's self.
