Does anyone know what G7 stands for on this please

I have this written under my cross slide . Does anyone know what this is or means please:

This is not going to help much but i`m pretty sure its not Myford or Drummond , maybe Winfield ? Are those 4 counter sunk alan bolts, if so it could well be an ex-owners further mod to whats already a non standard top slide……………..b

Do you mean top slide or cross slide?

Hi Bodge , what the alan bolts hold I have not a clue . I think they removed the rails that hold the top slide .The slide came of without removing them thought it was ml7 but now not sure . Hadn't heard of Winfield but have been searching google images but doesnt look like that either?

Hi Martin, Have had good look at the pics and tend to agree with you as i cant think of any other reason for them. I think the whole assembly may well be home brewed, probably dates to a time before Chinese imports and lathes were relatively expensive and people used to fix things,………….b

I would have thought the 4 screws hold the Male part of the dovetail to the flat bottom plate if its a made up dovetail rather than it having been cut from solid with a DT cutter

It's possible that it was put there during manufacture. A fitter would have assembled parts together, and perhaps they were then sent away for further processing such as painting. The marking would enable the correct assembly to be reunited with the lathe to which it was fitted. Look under the tailstock and see if there's another G7 there.

Nice work , Jason yes think its somthing like that but with a hollow in middle . Nigel have not had tail stock of yet as not sure how to remove it but there was nothing under the gear head like this

It isn't the original topslide so don't expect matching marks. (Nigel you weren't to know this necessarily) Since the topslide was separated from its parent lathe it is probable that it was used as a vertical slide on some other lathe (hence screw) and, if in a school might need a number to get it back with its home. Factory assembly marks wouldn't be that big.

Hi dont know it came with it and was in storage for 50 years so not used in a school either to my knowlege. there is no other markings like this save a small 2 or z under tailstock.

hi its definaly an ML7 but modified found this trawling

Exactly the same and this cut down one side off and milled thinner

Which looks very similar i didnt know there was two types of ML7 upper bottom slide
