Hello who has made their own diy dovetails and what carbide bits did you use please ?

See my album for my first try. Bit type is unknown. A friend gave me some bits and I had a go.

Here are some commercially available ones

I cannot find those inserts on ebay, would the code be unique to Shars ?

There are a few pics in one of my albums of a set I made from IIRC en24 and tcgt inserts [ various sizes ] be precise when setting up to machine the pocket / angle, also use the correct screws for the inserts [ vey important ] I used tcgt inserts because of the 7deg clearance angle to prevent rubbing and gives a nice soft cutting action The test block in some of the pics is either en16 or 24 can't remember. There is a thread on them somewhere on this site

          Good luck.

              Hi Bill,

I have made a carbide tipped dovetail cutter more or less like described here, using a TCMT insert. There is another description of a dovetail cutter with carbide inserts on MikesWorkshop. A multipoint cutter would cut better than a singlepoint cutter, but I often use the carbide tipped cutter to mill away most of the material and use a HSS cutter for the finishing cut.

Thanks for the responses. Am off to learn about inserts, particularly TC inserts.

WHilst investigating inserts I couldnt help noticing on the market that must not be named the huge disparity in prices ie all the way from $7ish to $100+ for 10 inserts.

AM assuming anything less than $50 for 10 is rubbish quality ? I have no idea, have been putting off learning about inserts but now looks like the right time.

                    Hi Bill,

If buying brands like Sandvik, Sumitomo etc. you know what you get. I have tried cheap inserts and some seem to work as well as the expensive ones, at least for my modest use. I tried a box of 10 first and have bought the same again from the same supplier.
