Just finished making a replacement for my engine and have a clearence between cylinder and piston of 0.04 is this ok or is it too much ?

Prior to soldering and a little oil to test it blows the end cap off which is a tight push fit.

      cheers

      Bob

Sorry Bob.. I have no direct knoledge of the wilesco but mamod pistons/cyclinders always seemed loose to me.

if over tight than it won't run , if its loose it will run ( loosing steam yes but will run) , if it has the kind of seal you seem to have cold and both are brass then should still work hot ( if dissimular metals then a check for relative expansion rates might be in order)..

I remember a "rule" for small engins..if the piston will fall under own weight "unchoked" but oiled and will make "pop" noise when pulled out of choked cylinder then thats ok….

          Best of luck

is that .04 mm or inches!!

it must be mm…brain now in gear!

I would go for .0005" which is 0.0127mm

I use O rings for this situation and am satisfied when it pops if quickly withdrawn from cycliner.

                    0.04mm is approx 1.6 thou..

~Ideally you would lap the cylinder and the piston…

It should work fine if the steam consumption isnt excessive.
