I wonder how many of the other purchasers just got on and made their holders fit. Simple enough to turn down a bit of bar to say 20mm and with a 20mm collet mount the holder on that. Then bore out the register to a larger dia, Loctite in a sleeve and then bore that out to what fits your particular machine.

ideally not something you should have to do but you still get a collet chuck that fits for less effort than making one from scratch

Firstly let me humbly apologise to Chronos as I never expected to open a can of worms.

The chuck was purchased via eBay item No 372267532311 and received Iit promptly in a well packed parcel.

It was unpacked and tried on the lathe and quickly checked only to find inaccuracies and removed, refitted and double checked with a different result which prompted a bit deeper investigation resulting in finding the bore for the register had been machined oversize.

I contacted the seller and explained my problem asking them to please check their stock, I expected a replacement and a request to return the chuck.

What happened then was a reply stating that they where all the same and to raise a return and send it back(this has been done) leaving me a little disappointed that I still hadn't got a chuck.

I was puzzled, did I expect too much or was it a case of ignorance is bliss, how could I find out??? Most of these will have been purchased by hobby engineers. post on here and hopefully someone will inform me.

Well I did get some response but none from any satisfied or dissatisfied customers which still leaves me guessing surely I can't be the only person to put a clock on one.

In summarising I have no quarrel with Chronos and would use them again should the need arise, would I buy another Indian or Chinese manufactured chuck or similar no not without serious thought first.

Thanks to you all for your comments.

JasonB I'd thought of that but felt at £55 it should fit.

Just a thought, I'm not familiar with the Chronos product.

Some collet chucks come with adjusting screws to match the machine accurately. Cheaper versions are trued by tapping them into position – the register is a deliberately loose fit. It wasn't one of those was it?

No, I did look at the Chronos product but ended up making my own, I wanted ER25 and, IIRC, Chronos ony did ER32. The chuck is a one-piece unit screwing directly onto the spindle nose, just like a normal chuck backplate. No adjustment is possible. Interestingly, I've just looked at the Chronos site, and they now seem to offer back-plate mounted ER chucks, (a-la Arc?), which could allow for slight "adjustment". I think that's a very recent offering. They're a bit dearer than the direct-mounting type, but might suit the OP better.

Some interesting, but not very enlightening, points about the ebay item:

              • There are two 'reviews' … both very positive.
              • The Item description shows it as 'New From Soba, and exclusive to Chronos!'
              • [despite which] ebay shows it to be 'trending' at a different price
              • Brand = unbranded
              • EAN = does not apply

Probably nothing sinister, but 'does not compute'

                Thanks Michael

Yes I found it strange as well maybe they didn't actually check their stock and I was just unlucky, I would have been very pleased with an accurate replacement.

One review was back in January. Chronos advert claims’New’ from soba.

I expect that this ‘new’ batch is a dodgy one and the older review was from a previous batch. I noted, when I looked up the part on the Chronos website, that only 6 had already been sold.

At that price, it was not particularly cheap – probably would have been half that price, if made in china and on the banggood site. The Arc product is of a similar price but would need a back plate for mounting to the lathe – and their product would either have run true or be collected, for testing, by Arc. I am confident of that Faulty goods, not fit for service, should be collected by the seller. The buyer is the innocent party.

I also take reviews as what they are. Often plugs for the product, or others have no relevance – or sometimes a whinger who slags off the product for no good reason or without evidence. They all need to be read carefully and accepted or discarded on their technical content.

One review did state there were previous reports of poor quality from elsewhere…

Maybe that's correct if I could have achieved those TIR's I would have been well pleased.

                      Hi Tony,

Please relax…. you didn't open any new can of worms. These worms have been around for a long time. teeth 2

The product you got may still be faulty as per your observations. When you refer to reviews/feedback, some have mentioned earlier in this thread that they returned their direct mounting chuck to Chronos. I have spoken with some customers who have had great results with it, and some who have been highly disappointed. I can only guess that it is a batch related issue – one which Chronos may agree or disagree to recognise.

                          Hi Michael,

                          Probably nothing sinister.

If the product is 'unbranded', it just allows the manufacturer – Soba to sell it to someone else who does not want Sobas brand on it. Or, if there are rejects to which they do not want their name associated, it could come onto eBay via various back-door dealers. This practice we have seen a lot. For example, during our inspection process in Delhi, ARC rejected a high percentage of swivel angle plate because they failed to meet our specific need. We had checked each and every unit. The order was large, and the rejection was large. The manufacturer was not happy. His statement was, 'if it is good enough for x, it should be good enough for you'. We agreed to disagree. He took back the rejected stuff, and now we see a bucket load of the rejected stuff on eBay. He also had to re-make a new lot for us, which he did, to our satisfaction.

Almost all of the Indian manufacturers have 'back door' dealers and own back door accounts (one of whom has eight accounts), for one reason or another ranging from greed, over run disposal, rejection disposal.

You've put a smile back on my face, a replacement could have avoided all this.
