Cleaning threads

I have a bench grinder and the left side nut won't thread on, it james after a few turns. The issue is kinda increased cause as a bench grinder spindle it is a pain keeping the spindle still. Further more it is a left hand thread so no tap or dies.

Anyone got hints for getting a looser fit on the threads? I would use a die to clean up the spindle generally but I don't feel like buying a left hand die just for this.

Thread restoring file, they don't mind if its L/H or R/H

Add a thicker washer or washers, so avoiding those threads?

Make a pinch collar for the section of plain shaft and hold the shaft still with an appropriate spanner, wrench, etc?

Is it the nut, or the shaft threads that are galled/stretched/otherwise damaged? No point in holding one, if the other is at fault.
