Changewheel / Backgear lubrication

Referring to my facsimile info from "lathes.co.uk" for Myford ML10 Rocol Molytone grease ( is this still available ?) OR SAE10 oil for this purpose – so not very critical then.

I've got an old tub of Castrol MS3 grease kicking around from my last century DIY car maintenance, only used for the odd bonnet catch now, presumably suitable ?

I would not use grease. Swarf will stick to it and make a splendid grinding paste.

Not much oil is needed on change gears — the load on them is minimal and they are cast iron so "self lubricating" to a certain extent.

Any old oil will do ok on the back gear. Whatever you have in your oil can. That said, I use spray can motorbike chain lube because it sticks to the gears but is not sticky (once dried) and makes minimum mess.

Be sure to oil the pulley where it spins on the mandrel when in back gear. Not sure on your model if/where the oil hole or fitting is. On some it is in the side of the pulley at the large end.

Point taken about "grinding paste" , helped a friend doing his Mini cylinder head many moons ago – very messy !

I've got my eye on one of those Reilang oil cans now,to do the countershaft and maybe a brush attachment for the ways as well.A cheap grease gun for this later ML10 roller bearing variant, and my Meddings quill and I should be sorted.

I use a dropper bottle with chain saw oil, quite sticky/stringy and clings quite well…………

in fact I use it all over the place, milling machine table and lift screw threads…….

For general oiling, including lathe gears and bearings I use plain old SAE 30, although it's not so easy to get nowdays.

I use chain bar oil for everything except the back gears – not because it is no good i just found something better – tac 2 spray lube or motorcycle chian lube .

both are designed to stick to what ever you spray it on and not fling off everywhere and you only need the tiniest amount – just a little squirt is enough .

SAE30 is available from many car accessory shops as well as the internet. It is usually called Classic Oil and is used in many classic cars, in my case for summer use in a 1931 Austin Seven.

Try bunnings or supercheap auto if you have them in NZ.

I think Bunnings and supercheap sell it as briggs and stratton oil or small engine oil , i used it for my air compressor as that was what pilot specified .

Motorbike chain oil I have found is good. Helps that I have it anyway as I have a motorbike. – But just a quick squirt every now and again and it stays on the gears and does not get flung everywhere. Cleaning time is just a bit of paraffin.
