Tell him to get down to Lidl tomorrow, I bought one this morning for £19.99. It's a rebadged Grizzly and may last a few years.

I bought a small chain grinder, about 25 pounds. Works better than expected, much quicker than a file. Modern chains seem to be harder than of old, or the files are softer.

The £20.00 Lidl devices look as if they could do a decent job of basic shaping of HSS blanks prior to sharpening given some simple add on holding devices. One under my bench waiting for me to try.

None left in my Lidl but saw one tonne chain hoist for 25 quid which might help lift that new lathe or mill.

Back to original question – looks like a design / MEW article opportunity. Perhaps some kid of sprocket the chain can go around held in the universal head to get the angles.

I use a dremel with small stones works well. I have the freedom to use the biggest stone that I can fit in as it changes the angle of the bevel it cuts. Cannot tell from professionally sharpened chains last a long time as the shops take about 1/3 of the tooth off each time, saves them time going around the second time because not enough taken off the first time. Also get to sell chains faster.
