So you computer buffs any clues that might help me with this problem.

I have a Canon Pixma 3650 printer scanner, working wirelessly off my Win10 laptop. Had it for a while now and always worked ok but suddenly decided it will print ok but not scan, Clicking on 'Scan' shortcut I set up it just says 'To get started connect a scanner'. been through all sorts of settings and problem finders to no avail.

Any ideas guys.

Some ideas which have worked for me in similar device to computer issues:

-check that the printer is still seeing your network

-reboot the computer the wifi is run by, or boot the internet modem if using one.

-shut the printer scanner down, wait 30 sec, power back up.

-connect a USB cable between PC and scanner/printer and see if the scanner will work with that.

Hope this helps. Sorry if it is all obvious to you or has already been tried.

It does sound like a driver issue,

please consider going to the Canon web site and download the new version of the scanner driver or the whole suite.

Hopefully this will help your problem.

My Canon printer occasionally won't even print!

I suspect a Windows update causes the issue.

Incidentally, our computers at work started crashing after a Windows update last month, every time we tried to print from a Kyocera printer……

Built in obsolescence ??? My CANON MP 560 stopped printing black, would scan and copy black, but not print black from the computer. Their drivers are now out of date for the latest operating system.

Also it would loose WiFi so often that it became a pain in the whatnot.

However I did replace it with another – CANON TS 5350. This has the Apple AirPrint (Good for me) OCR, and PDF scanning besides all the norms.

Their ink ( very expensive) is guaranteed for 100 years for photos but I doubt either Canon or myself will be around to verify that !

Have a look at VueScan. It has drivers for many obsolete scanners. It's free to try but you need to pay to use it without watermarks.

My Epson printer claimed to be worn out. Apparently it contained a counter which declared it kaput and stopped it working after a set number. A local computer shop returned the counter to zero; for a sum.

The next time that it happened, it was no more expensive to buy a new Canon Printer, which would also scan, and copy..

So an otherwise serviceable machine went for scrap

another support for Vuescan – allowed my good quality slide scanner of Win98/XP vintage to work under linux as well as a large HP office scanner/printer (minus the very expensive print heads) bought for ?1 at auction pre-covid with the intention of stripping out the motors but the scanning is both fast + excellent quality – really need to find some way of stripping out the scanner

After many years with two epson printers,the last Epson wanted some type of servicing and as it was at the start of this lockdown ,went in a hurry to Currys and bought a Cannon g4511 Pixma ,when it prints the quality of black type is very good but it will not work from my applemac unless connected with hard cable,instructions are useless ,helpline just gave a load of instructions to try to cure the non event wireless connection.but they were difficult to understand.I would never buy another cannon printer. Sometime I switch it on and it will print amother its a pig to get it to work,the screen is so tiny and the control buttons so small.

Maybe some of the problems are not being close enough to the router?

I view the images from my Canon MG4200 on the screen of my PC, and being hard wired, the only troubles that I experience are those of an untrained operator, when scanning..

No doubt, familiarity will improve matters.

A comparison between wi fi and hard wired. Wife's lap top, 36 Mb/s hard wired, compared to wi fi, about 300 mm from the router!

In contrast, this wi fi keyboard and mouse need the transmitter to be within 300 mm to be trouble free.

Hardwiring gets my vote

There are sometimes restrictions in the driver between hard wired and wireless resulting in less functions under wireless. I too use Vuescan with an Epson V750 scanner for film scanning on a Mac, over the years it has operated faultlessly over OS version updates. It is hardware specific so unless you intend to keep the scanner it may be an expensive get out.

The CANON TS 5350 has an auto power off (Energy saver) but also has a configurable power on when data received. So far, very pleased with it, but it does do a lot of "background" mechanical stuff after a print run – hope its not just gobbling up ink !!

The strange thing is printer will print ok and until recently scanned ok, probably 3-4 weeks ago I last scanned.

Laptop usually 2 to 3 metres away from router, now something just occurred to me, a few weeks ago had internet problems, low speed or stopping all together, BT advised me to press the reset button every few months (the one where you use with a sharp point in a little hole) maybe a coincidence maybe not. The only other thing is that it keeps saying cartridge needs replacing, we know the colour one does, but too tight to replace it yet.

I think I will try the update driver and risk the wrath of 'er indoors if it totally stuffs up the printer.

I have had Canon printers for some years now, probably replace every 5-6 years, compared to the first couple of printers we had many moons ago, Lexmark, Canon faff about whirring and clanking for ever, the Lexmark used to clack once and just got on with it.

it needs the yellow ink to print the unique identifying code at top of each page – these identify the individual printer and from sales receipts the owner – just in case you start running off anti-Boris tracts.

I too use VueScan but while drivers are available for my HP G4050  scanner they produce scans of appallingly poor quality.

I bought the scanner off the reduced table in PCWorld and I suspect it was returned for this very reason. Thinking I had wasted (some more!) money I was persuaded to try VueScan. Instant superb quality scans!

I bought a registered version and it has updated with every change of OS since.

A great buy!

Canon printers with the large ink supply do that too. When the printer cleans the head there is excess ink which gets dumped on an absorbent pad. They have calculated how many times the heads can be cleaned before the pad gets saturated and they stop the printer at that point. (The whole thing is pretty crude). You have to take it to a Canon repair station to get it fixed (they say) where they replace the pad and reset the counter. It costs as much as a new printer.

The fix is actually do-able by anyone practically-minded …. the pad replacement is pretty trivial (new pads from BangGood) but you need to summon up the service software to reset the counter.

Funnily enough, I just did mine about a week ago.

The bulk-ink models of these printers sound great but I only got through half the first lot of ink before the pads got saturated.

I have an Epson printer (XP332/335) that directs the excess ink through a tube into a little tank at the back, where presumably it congeals and some sort of sensor disables the printer until it's either cleaned out or thrown away – it certainly doesn't get re-used, which is a shame. Not mentioned in the manual, I discovered it whilst sorting out another problem.

Same system as Canon then but a bit better engineered (tank instead of absorbent pad) as you might expect.

Since there are multiple ink colours involved, I don't know if it's really practical to keep them separate during cleaning and if they all go into the same tank …..

have Canon TS8250, best printer ever, after my last Canon had to be scrapped due to foreign object being sucked into the printer mechanism (Yes! my fault).

After supplied ink cartridges run out, I always use after market inks,

A full set of inks (6) from Canon cost more than the printer did,

The after market inks are much cheaper and work really well, I could not tell the difference.

Forget Epson and HP.

simple piece of advice DO NOT buy at the cheaper end, pay a bit more and go middle to top of range depending on depth of pocket and anticipated usage.

Second printer rip off, first being ink supplies.

Ink pads are easy enough to replace or wash out but you need gloves, very messy. There are/were resetting programmes on t'internet for various printers, download, click and the printer internal counter is zeroed.. Fitted a CISS system to my Epson C62 years ago and waste ink tank and saved hundreds of pounds.

Instead of running a nozzle cleaning operation, was advised to just run a best quality photo print, cleans all the nozzles and uses far less ink.

At the time we bought the Epson, all in ones were in the hundreds of pounds and single printers cheap. How times have changed, the price structure has reversed. Try buying a dedicated ink jet printer with SEPARATE ink tanks cheaply now.

Thanks for input guys, finally got it sorted, don't ask me how though!

Tried driver update which didn't seem to make any difference, gave up in disgust.

Had another go today through a different route, I think, (as I said don't ask me to describe step by step) printer settings and management etc.

Looks like a comprehensive update so I have a load of shortcuts on screen to all sorts of features, found scan button and bingo. I can scan. Perseverance wins.

Can only assume it was one of the dreaded W10 updates.
