As I said earlier the trick is "If you can't get them all even swap jaws 2 and 3 over and try again." Always leave No. 1 jaw in place.

I have a Forkardt F125 3 jaw chuck as mentioned by JS on my Boley 5LZ lathe with reversible jaws. Its a fantastic piece of kit but a bit dear at £2000 + for the chuck body and £380 for a set of jaws. Thats a lot more than I payed for the complete lathe .

It is balanced with a top speed rating of 4500rpm

My mantra from the first days of my Unimat (similar reversing jaws scroll chuck) was remove 3 jaws, move scroll back to just before space 1 on the chuck then "3 into 1", move scroll to space n°2, "2 into 2", move scroll to space n°3, "1 into 3".

To return to inside jaws, move scroll back to just before space 1 on the chuck then "1 into 1", move scroll to space n°2, "2 into 2", move scroll to space n°3, "3 into 3".

Cleanliness is definitely next to godliness (well, concentricity), clean out the teeth on the jaws frequently and also the scroll itself – old toothbrush works well.

It is worth making up a set of C spanners to use with this type of chuck. I described a set for the Unimat in ME some years back. One of them has to have a cutout to clear the chuck jaw, but other than that they are pretty straightforward, and are easier than messing around with the bars.

Having got the jaws into the "correct" position, dare I suggest trying to engrave (probably too hard to stamp) both Chuck and Jaws, (say A, B, C; or may be A-C, B-B, C-A ) so that you know which slot to put them in next time?

Four hours of frustration each time is not what the hobby is about, AND the stress is not good for you or those around you!

Simon's tip about using a cleaned redundant tooth brush for cleaning is an excellent one. They are good for cleaning taps before you put them away.
