      Do adapters exist?

The last few weeks I have increasingly been making use of a lever operated Acrovu 5C collet system that came with Harrison M250 lathe I bought a couple of years ago. Whilst it takes a few seconds longer to change collet size compared with using a three jaw chuck I now find that I rarely actually need to use a normal chuck.

What I would like is to be able to fit a chuck into the 5C taper for small turning operations that do not need to use the full capabilities of a D1-3 mount. I have a 'spare' 100mm Trugrip (Myford mount) so I wondered if there was such a thing as a ready made 5C to Myford thread arbor?

Is it a threaded body or on a myford backplate? You can get 5C backplates which are basically a blank flange on a 5c taper that is machined like a backplate to suit your chuck. Not seen one with a Myford nose though.

ARC do 5C blank arbors upto 100mm which would do the job

I never thought of looking at Arc so thanks for pointing out those 5C adapters.

The Griptru I have is direct Myford fitting so one option would be to machine off the Myford threaded boss and convert the chuck to backplate mount. I suppose that might offend some folks so option two might be to sell or swap the Myford chuck for a normal backplate mount chuck.

              .

I fail to see what the hell it's got to do with anyone else what you do with your possessions. indecision

Having said that a griptru chuck in a Myford fitting in good condition would I think bring a very nice return so maybe keep it as it is and sell in for pure fiscal reasons.

Even if it is in poor condition once the word 'Myford' gets introduced into something for sale it seems to double in value from it's true worth anyway. winkwink

If you do decide to change chucks Chester do a 3 Jaw with integrated 5C mount for around £160.00. May be other suppliers but my Google Fu is down this morning.

Bought similar one, maybe from Chester, around 20 years ago to go with a spindexer and other 5C equipment I was tooling up with. Memory says it was less costly in those days. About the same as the spindexer itself. Chinese import chuck but quite respectable quality and accuracy. Its no griptru but I'm happy enough to slot it into the 5C native spindle on my Smart & Brown 1024 when I have a job that needs a small chuck.

If, like me, you have the full x 1/64 ths 5C set there is always a collet available when you need accuracy so griptru precision is probably wasted.

Thanks to Jason for highlighting the ARC arbors as I really need to get round to mounting up a small four jaw too.

I just read Clive's comment re having a full set of 5C collets. I have such a set and do 80 or 90 % of my work in collets.

                    Ian,

Some time ago I wanted to extend the diameter of stock that could be held in a 5C collet. I had a spare 3" Burnerd lever scroll chuck so I made an adapter from an ARC blank 5C arbor as suggested by JasonbB.Tthis worked out very well so I wrote the project up and had it published in Engineering In Miniature Vol 35 No1 July 2013. There is probably just enough meat on the relevant ARC arbor to produce a Myford register and slightly shortened thread.

                    Eric.

I have decided that I will definitely end up with a 5C mounted chuck, I now just have to decide how.

As Clive stated its not really essential for a 5C arbor mounted chuck to be a high precision type so whilst I could thread an Arc arbor to take the Griptru (which is a nice compact chuck compared to the Chester 5C offering) its a bit of a waste.

At the moment the Griptru is 'spare' because the only thing it fits is a Vertex BS0 dividing head which I have only ever used it once, (and even then it was a compromise to hold the job in the Griptru). I have never dialed-in the Griptru because doing so on the dividing head would be a real chore as its not easy to disengage the worm gear to quickly rotate the spindle. All in all I think I will sell the chuck and Vertex and as I only have about 20 assorted metric and imperial collets and put the money into a lot more collets.

There's no need to turn off the Myford threading on your chuck to fit a D1-3 backplate; I've got such a set-up on my Boxford. You pick up the existing backplate screw holes in the chuck and use longer screws. You need to bore out the adaptor to a good fit on the existing chuck boss. Mine is about 23mm thick. If I need to I can then easily return the chuck to Myford fit.

I am not trying to put the Griptru on a D1-3 mount but if I had to, your method make sense.
