      Hi guys,

I've just purchased the drawings for a 5" Pansy Loco. Does anyone know if there is any build notes or information regarding the step by step build of this Loco. Either in ME or published books?

Thanks for your help guys and girls.

in google or whatever search for "Model Engineer Index" this gets you more than one method of checking ME articles. Then search for whatever you are interested in.

Thanks guys, very helpful. Just received the plans through the door. I've heard they may have a few errors. Does anyone know if this is true.

If this is the LBSC "Pansy" you can count on their being a few errors, although how many and how serious they are I don't know, but all have probably been sussed out and posted or printed somewhere.

A check of Alan Stepney's model engineering page, which had an ongoing "Errors" page, shows that unfortunately the page is no longer up. Perhaps it's been reposted under a different name. I have the information from Alan's Errors list but it's on another computer and I'll have to go there to search it out. If I find there is any information there I'll post. it.

Alan Stepney's pages can still be found, this one gives some errors for Pansy

Thanks everyone, very helpful as per usual. I'll take some time online and make some searches. Would hate to get so far in the build and realise its not quite right. I've got plenty of time though, i'm expecting a long 5 year drag with taking work and personal duties into consideration.

                        Thanks again.

Richard – I set out to make one of these many years back. There are numerous mistakes on the drawings, one that springs to mind is the position of the brake hangar pivot holes. There are also errors on the valve gear but it's too long ago for me to remember where and what.

I was told that there was a list of errors published in Model Engineer and after contacting them John Crisp who owned Reeves at the time located a copy and sent them to me. Whether you would get the same response now I have no idea but John was very helpful indeed.

It was at least a page, possibly two as I recall and detailed the errors and dimensional mistakes. Unfortunately I can't tell you which issue of ME but I can say with certainty that it was published.

If you get your hands on the original articles you will find that the error on the brake hangars mentioned previously do not get dealt with until the last instalment!

Good luck with your engine but do check and double check before machining those important dimensions.

                          Regards – Ramon

                            Thanks Ramon,

I've managed to acquire some issues from volume 118. 2968, 2969, 2970, 2971, 2972, 2973, 2974 and 2975. They do have further issues from volumes 118 – 120. I will see what info they hold, and if helpful purchase the rest.

I really like the Pansy and was expecting to name it after my 3 month old daughter. I'm hoping the errors won't change my mind with the build.

I will try my luck and see if I can acquire a full copy of the errors.

                            Regards, Richard.

A huge number have been built, and run very well ,staying and working in steam for 8 hours or more, but a little advice , start building ! while it is well worth while spending time looking for errors, it is so easy to wait until you think you are going to build the perfect engine, it will never happen, Doug Hewson has redrawn , and produced lazer cut part to scale, Don Ashton has produced improved valve gear arrangements, I thought I would do the same for theB1 ( Springbok) which has more errors than would fill a book, and wasted years, could have had two built two by now LBSC did produce engines that would run and work, go fot it!!

Thanks Peter, I feel reassured. I'll keep you guys posted as the project develops. Don't plan to start until next month. Thanks again.

                                  Hi Richard,

Can you PM me and I will send you via email my list of alterations to Pansy?

The Martin Evans corrections are partly true but do not deal with lots of fundamental errors with the valve gear and much else besides. John Baguley and I arrived at different ways to deal with the valve gear which has considerable problems as drawn, and certain dimensions that are critical (but wrong) are only in the construction series.

Yes, many have been built to the drawings but can you notch up and get the loco to run properly?

I spent many years building a Pansy (now sadly sold and in good hands in Kent). I spent a great deal of time referring to the GWR drawings and LBSC's drawings.

                                  Cheers,

                                  Julian

                                    Buffers.

Help once again…. I am in the middle of machining the buffer beams for the Pansy, so far so good. Now I don't know if I'm being blind or just stupid, as I'm new to loco building, but I can't find the drawings for the buffers. They don't seem to be on the drawings. Can someone point me in the right direction, either purchasing a set already made or to the details required for machining.

                                    Thanks in advance.

                                    Richard.

Thanks for this. I recently purchased both volumes 118 and 119, and shall have a good read.
