I want to buy a broaching set.

Have found one which is described as broaching set for CNC router.

I do not have CNC router but I do have 3t arbor press.

Is it going to work with this broaching set or is there some peculiarity involved which I do not understand and yet which makes it impossible to use my press?

Asking because I do not want to throw away my money.

      Martin

Post a link to the CNC router ones then we may be able to see if there is anything different about them.

If they are like these then they won't work with a press

They would be OK with a press, depending on if you get charged VAT, import duty and post office charge it may be cheaper to get a set from ARC

I want to make an offer ($110 + p&p). Many times Chinese have accepted an offer ranging 40-60% of their advertised price. Maybe they will again. VAT or duties are not a problem. Chinese suppliers are declaring very low values on their parcels. It is their SOP.

If they accept it, will proceed, if not will buy from ARC but ARC wants about 200 queeds for comparable set.

HMRC woke up to this last year and called in a lot of the warehouses that do UK distribution for Chinese companies… more people are getting hit for import duties, including my wife and daughter.

Interesting that including 'expedited delivery' the eBay set and the Arc set are virtually identical prices.

In bad luck case, one may have to pay an odd duty, however it have never happened to me while buying on ebay from China.

I think, there is a duty treshold and below certain value they don't care and probably there is a general exemption (one need to check).

It is a sad truth that we cannot afford duty war or (God forbid!) wider trade war with China. If that came true, our women would need to walk without panties because we are no longer producing these. Everything and anything would come to a standstill.

Our illusion of wealth is on Chinese license.

I think we get away with the VAT charges because most things are less than 2kg, so are delivered by the postie. If Parcelforce get involved, then there are more likely charges involved due to them perhaps having more time to collect the tax (and charge that extra fee on each delivery).

The paperwork for customs clearance is horrendous, compared with the loss of revenue and logistics of storing millions of small items while awaiting that paperwork and the small payments to be processed.

                        Hello Martin,

Is that 'I want' or 'I need'? If owning another machine (space, use, etc) would be another option and the parts to be broached are of suitable dimensions, a shaper might be less expensive.

I was considering looking around for some broaches, but my little hand shaper will suffice for all my current needs. Well, OK, I have the Alexander which is adequate – and I will admit to finding a Drummond which is rather more capable and likely easier to set up. These hand shapers will do a good job of keyway cutting on smaller items, but also can be used for other duties (which can be conjured up, once you have one!).

I do not have enough of projects to justify shaper yet.

One engineering company I know is installing CNC facilities later next year. They have a shaper in good working order which will have to go (lack of space) and they may well give it away or sell for a scrap value. Machine is quite heavy however and proper milling machine is now my priority (will get it mid next year).

BTW, proper means about 1 ton of weight, colant system installed, power feed in x and y axis, horizontal and vertical spindles etc.

But who knows… once they have to get rid of this shaper, I may well go for it.

                          Martin.

The reason most purchase don't get charges is because there is de minimus rule of £15.

I'm afraid I will have to 'stomp on' any discussion of how to evade VAT or import duty.

Do you need a full set of broaches, I think the way to buy is the same as suggested for taps and dies, get the ones you are going to use as you need them. If nothing else you won't have unused broaches lying around.

                                    Martin,

have you decided which sizes of broaches you require? A google search brings up, for example, a set of 3,4,6,8mm broaches with bushings and shims for £169 new and including VAT and delivery. They should work with a 3-ton arbour press.but i'd suggest confirming with the supplier as the distance from the ram down might be critical depending on your requirements. .

hi JasonB it was a typo on my part – the set is actually a 26pc set that I came across having 4 extension pieces.

I'm wondering if it was an assumption on your part that the item was from a Chinese seller – the set is actually available on a next day basis so in all probability rules out shipping from a far off land!

Hugh, the one on your site only shows 22 items in the box and there is no mention of extensions in the description.

Is it just a generic photo and misleading description with another typo?

You can clearly see the extensions in the photo from ketan's site. Funny enough the only other people I can see selling this set are Shars in the US who want £209 for it ($279) before taxes.
