Brain fade!

I've been banging on about my brain fade episodes of late, but yesterday I surpassed myself in a big way!

I bought the Hemingway Drawbar kit moons ago, and after getting my 3MT tooling to all have the same height in the Marlow Spindle, thought it time to start said kit.

Handle first, it being a nice looking CI, but at nearly 3"ø had to reverse the 3 jaws.

Off they came, and then 'MegaBrainFade' took over, with me trying to put them back in, but reversed!

Just couldn't understand why they wouldn't screw in.

After a few tries, 'MegaBrainFade' faded and I could just stand there in utter astonishment at what I had just been trying to do.

I then dived into the lathe's toolbox and there the correct ones where, mocking me. I have looked into that toolbox a few times and seen them, but since treatment my memory has just given up on me.

The challenge – can anyone better me?

All I can say is I've done the same. The stomach-churning horror as you think something terminal has happened inside your prized chuck…

Then I didn't half feel like a berk when I saw the outside jaws laughing at me from the shelf.

Bored out a lathe faceplate once to the outside diameter of the required thread as opposed to the core diameter….the Loctite came in handy to fix that one….

Maybe my 6 inch rule has not got legs to move around the shop. Perhaps I just forgot where I put it, two minutes ago, AND failed to notice it as I turned around?

Yesterday evening in the workshop at the mill, micrometer in hand checking parts that I had just made the finish pass on , not understanding why I had only removed about half the material I had intended to. Simples DRO set on metric, venerable old M&W IMPERIAL micrometer in hand!, shame it took 15 minutes for the penny to drop

Something I witnessed a few years ago at my place of work takes some beating.

One of the employees (about 60 and a good engineer) was asked to reassemble some equipment into a 1m high 19" rack cabinet, the frame of which had just come back from being powder coated. He laid it on its back on a piece of carpet and then proceeded to bolt on its swivel castors, after he had fixed on the first three castors I happened to look at his endeavours and noticed something amiss.

He had meticulously inserted and tightened 12 nuts, bolts and washers without realising that the castors should be on the underside of the baseplate, rather than on the INSIDE of the cabinet!

I do like the castors on the inside, a new variation!!

We all do these silly things, and then feel twice as foolish doing it again.

My wife's grandmother, who hailed from Russia, summed it all up with her wise saying—-

I once (and fortunately only once) spent ten minutes trying to drill a hole in a piece of rock hard free cutting mild steel with a 1/2"drill before I realised the drill was running in reverse. I even kept checking the drill tip was sharp and couldn't understand why it wouldn't bite.  I was not impressed with myself.

Once on the Welsh Highland Railway, I was labouring for the stonemason when he was building a reception chamber for the trackside drains, and he had it nicely completed when a passing dumper truck driver asked innocently whether the drain pipes ought to be incorporated into it…

I remember some years ago a neighbour bought a s/h Hillman Imp, nice car but he had to have it towed home. Spent many fruitless days trying to get it started until a bright spark (not me) realised the starter was turning the wrong way!

Ha! Yes Chris, same here! Was a hand me down bosch and didn't even realise high speed drills ran in reverse lol

Was quite embarrassed when the chap who gave it to me explained what the little lever did
