      Hi,

I am just returning to ‘home workshop engineering’ and have bought a lathe (but yet to be delivered).  Could anyone please help with some dimensions?  I need the cabinet width and depth for a Boxford AUD Mk2 16″ centres so that I can manufacture a wheeled base for it to be dropped into.  I have rolled machines on 1″ bar in the past but the terrain is challenging this time!

      Any help is much appreciated.

      David

If you can borrow some scaffold battens,it is possible to use your rollers.I have used battens to move a skip full of clay by jacking it up and sitting it on rollers when the ground got too wet for the lorry to lift it.

Can’t the person with the cabinet tell you what the dimensions are?

If the vendor can’t (or won’t) supply the measurements and you are prepared to accept the results from an Artificial Ignorance source, this is what I got back by asking it for “Boxford AUD cabinet dimensions”

            AUD cabinet

Is that adequate for the trolley your want to make?

EDIT:   If you haven’t already got it, the Boxford “Know your lathe” manual is a useful reference and includes a number of non Boxford-specific information of general interest.

EDIT²:  One source of the above is HERE. It will download the pdf file directly.

Hi, as far as I know, the CUD, BUD and AUD MK2 lathe cabinets, are all the same size, with respect to the distance between centres. My MK2, 16″ centres CUD cabinet to the best measurement is 40-5/8″ (1032mm approx) long, and 13″ (330.2mm approx) wide, excluding the doors on the front, but the bottom of the doors are about 2-1/2″ (63.5mm) above the bottom of the cabinet, it stands about 30-1/2″ to the top of the tray. which is about 2″ to 2-1/2″ both ways, longer/wider than the cabinet.

              Regards Nick.

My AUD – Bed 36″ measured from LHS of headstock located on the ‘Vees’ to the RH end of the Vees.

Cabinet base 39 1/2 x 13″  the doors protrude over the base, but the hinges/doors  lift straight off.

The tray is substantially larger being 43″ x 17 1/2″ with an upstanding lip of 1″

Overall height, floor to top of tray is 28 1/2 + 1″

I will now go and wash my hands, and remove cobwebs from hair etc.

Thank you all for the responses.  I had guessed the width at about 14″ (based on the documented 17 1/2″ tray) so two of you saying 13″ gives me something closer to work on.  The length can a bit more flexible as does doesn’t affect entrance restrictions.  I just want my wheels at a reasonable width to reduce the wobble.  Didn’t get dims from seller as it was an auction purchase and oddly what I wanted to know is one of the few things not detailed when searched on the interweb.

                  Thanks again, much appreciated

                  David
