American equivalents (steel)

I have a set of drawings from American origin for an engine I am considering building.

They list for certain parts a grade of steel as A311. This stuff :- **LINK** 

What is the UK EN designation for this please. I have looked on the web, but it's all Greek to me.

It's most commonly known here in the US as 1144. That might yield a better search result for you.

Yanks favorite metal for model crankshafts. I either use black Mild steel which does not move about much or EN8 and take care to balance the cuts and let it rest. Or go for a built up crank.

Basically its heat treated to remove any internal stress so won't move about when you start making unbalanced cuts in it.

Hi Nick, A311 is an ASTM designation, the equivalent AISI code is as Peter mentioned AISI 1144. [ Stressproof ] I have used it a few times and it is tough, but nice to machine. Not quite as tough as AISI 4340 [EN 24 ] . With the correct insert it can leave a lovely surface finish.

If its the engine we were talking about then substitute EN1A for the cam lobe blank and Stainless 303 for the valves.
