The manual says net weight 700kg. I need to reduce that, ideally to not more than 250 kg chunks. Any owners got an idea if that's possible. If I take the knee and table off, and the over arm, I assume the base separates from the top, although I'd need to disconnect the spindle drive belts. I'm thinking doing this may achieve the objective. Any thoughts on this?

If it is any thing like my Marlow mill it should split down to reasonable sized chunks..

I split mine down to head (vertical machine), column, x axis table, y axis table, knee, and base. all very heavy, needed to split it down to get it into my old property workshop on my own. now sitting in two pieces in the existing garage waiting for my new garage to get built hope to start August.

You can take the motor out but I imagine that main base casting is about half the weight without the knee.

Are you sure the base alone would weighing half the total – eg 350kg? I'm not saying its wrong, just a bit surprising, but this is the informaiton I am after – if its true, even splitting it wouldn't get the parts down to my managable max – which is 250kg – so this gets crossed off my list – pitty its a very compact mill.

I doubt the base is the heaviest part that is probably the column.

If you have an overall weight of 700kg then splitting it should take all the individual parts below the 250kg.

I don't have one of these but had a look at one last year and wondered what could come off. By base I meant base and column as I don't think you would want to go further if indeed they do separate. I was imagining taking taking bits off my mill (not an 1es) along the lines of overarm 100lbs, table 250lbs, knee 300lbs. Even the tiny little cast iron column of a Clarkson grinder is about 100lbs so a mill ought to be more than 5 times that but there again it is hollow.

I once dismantled a Tom Senior mill for transport and the column when removed from the base was still the heaviest part, Looking at pictures of the A & S mill the column would no doubt be the heaviest item even when unbolted from the base casting. I must admit that if a machine is in good condition and well adjusted they are best left alone as dismantling always disturbs swarf in remote crevices and this can get into places where you dont want it when re assembling. I find an engine lifting crane is very useful,mine with a one tonne capacity can lift a lot of the smaller machines complete or can help with removing parts of bigger machines, its surprising what can be moved with rollers (steel pipe) and a crowbar.
