A different kind of a parting tool

Seen on an ad for an old South Bend lathe. Not so much a rear parting tool as an overhead parting tool. The ad calls it a cut-off tool, although it looks like it puts a good bevel on in the process. It apparntly works by pulling on the handle at the top (almost out of the pic) and the eccentric cam action would give quite a nice firm tool delivery but with good "feel".

I wonder if used with a conventional parting blade could it have an application in the home workshop? I wonder how a cross slide mounted version might work? Quick action, or quick disaster?

An intriguing bit of kit, nonetheless. Looks to be shop made, on a production/capstan version of the 10 k SB. Certainly food for thought.

Looks like it's been designed to chop off lots of stock of a specific diameter. Not sure how this would work out for occasional parting off as it's quite a lump! Interesting idea nonetheless.

The tools too wide for parting off . I think its just facing or maybe form a part then part off ?

I think I saw a lathe on aliexpress with a similar tool bolted to headstock. It was a production machine with lever operated cross slide and collet chuck.

Same as the more common Hardinge cut off tool which mounts over the spindle.
