Talking of Mercan marketing liberties, you'll see that DeWalt (Black and Decker) in the UK sell an 18V Li-Ion product alongside their 18V competitors. Naturally in the US, some creative marketing genius decided that they should sell it as "20V MAX". It all seems rather pathetic viewed from over here but I bet the guy is regarded as a bit of a god. I'm sure it sells products to gullible punters. As you say, it's the Mercan way….
Funny thing is, if you buy a pair of trousers over there according to your customary UK size, you will discover they are 2" too big around the waist. Somebody must have decided to knock 2" off the size tag, presumably to flatter the customers. Marketing genius at work?
