No really model engineering related but..

Does anyone know, in the Birmingham area where i might find a sheet on 6mm oil tempered hard board ?

I have tried just about everyone i can find but no joy, plenty of 3mm but no 6mm.

Its to replace the top of my work bench.

        Thanks for any leads.

You need to be looking fopr a large panel specialist, I doubt you will find it at many timer yards. The one I use down here has 6.4 oil tempered listed but a bit of a long way to go.

Might be a Meyer's near you as they do it too

You have it very good in the Midlands. So far as I am aware it's not available in any thickness here in Kent.

A couple of my benches were topped with OTHB and I'd love to get some more. It also makes very good templates for routing.

By way of consolation, I have recently discovered phenolic faced ply, an excellent material.

The bed material of choice for every one of the numerous Ifor Williams trailers on the road!

I'm a heathen, my bench is topped with two layers of 18mm shuttering ply!

Can't remember the name but when I worked in Brum many years ago there was a place by the flyover (Hockley ?) at the to of Constitution Hill. Signage said board specialist.

Thanks for the tip – good to know that the only way is not Essex!

Years ago I was rather spoilt as I lived directly opposite a firm that stocked OTHB. A short walk away was a proper timber merchant and I recall in an emergency "walking" an 8×4 home by fastening a wheel to one corner.

Just remembered the Brum based board suppliers name. Brough's. Try a search.

One of my benches (the one made from 2 pallets planked with 6×2 timbers and 4×4 cross timbers) is topped with 25mm planking overlaid with a 6mm steel plate I rescued from a skip. 1800 x 1150mm, 70kg. It was quite hard to get out of the skip, but I'll never regret it. It is an option, and makes the bench virtually indestructible. I have my 25kg anvil on it, and despite the fact the bench rests on the floor only with its own weight, I have never moved it.

I currently have a 1200 x 1200 x 10 aluminium plate and can't decide whether to use it for the aluminium or use it to top a bench for my Norton 6DB flypress. Could probably do both to an extent, given the size of the plate.

                            Regards,

                            Richard.

Thanks chaps for your help as always, but no joy.

Will just get a pierce of MDF to cover it.
