I picked up a 6" EME rotary table yesterday.

Today I stripped it down, there wasn't anything wrong with it, there was very little backlash and it all rotated freely when cranked but as its a simple bit of kit I thought it would be worth checking. I had a nice surprise, its like new internally, as the pictures show and appears to have done very little work. It seems of reasonable quality, all parts are stamped with identical serial numbers but I can't seem to find anything about EME on the net to see what they were like.

The old dry oil and what littl bit of surface rust removed and its ready to rebuild. The worm and wheel had very little lubrication as the rest of the table it has those nasty ball type oilers and I don't think they have been used much! I'm thinking the worm and wheel would benefit from a light smear of general purpose grease, any thoughts or suggestions?

EME I think is Elliott Machine Equipment, good quality British tooling dating from late seventies to early eighties. A finger full of Castrol LM grease on worm and wheel will do no harm at all.

Thanks Baz, I'll have a look at Elliott and see what I can find out. I meant to add that the fixing threads are metric so that fits in with the date. I have some LM so that will be ideal.

Looks very nice, if you don't mind me asking how much did you pick that up for?

£100 Peter, found it on facebook marketplace and only about an hour away.

I'd say you got a bargain there, very nice bit of kit, in great condition too, you probably paid half what a questionable quality import would be, I paid £260 for my 10" Hofmann, also in great condition, the seller had an 8" also, but convinced me the 10" was a better price saving from new compared to the 8" he had, and it was much smoother to use.

EME were importers of the unimat lathes, I rather suspect they were essentially badge engineers.

Very nice Peter, I was after a slightly larger one as I need it to mill some weight out of a car flywheel but this was too good to miss. The worm and wheel on this one are ground, both steel, it has a ball thrust and substantial bronze bearings on the indexing hamdle. Following up the lead from Baz I did a quick search, I think it was made by Elliott Machinery of Manchester.

If anyone can give more info on this it would be good, I've nearly purchased 'EME' tooling in the past, so knowing more about it would be nice.

I'm sure I've looked at one in the past to consider buying when I was looking, I'm glad to hear it's nicely made, and you're right, sometimes something is too good to turn down.

Nice rotary table! I don't think you'll be disappointed at all.

Elliott were a bit more than badge engineers. See **LINK**

Clearly a complex business arrangement. From what I've handled, seen and read, their equipment was no-nonsense, reliable and good quality, although not in the same league as some of the premium European, or better British manufacturers. Their products were a mixture of British-manufactured (by the companies they owned) and some imported gear, e.g. the Unimat, which they imported for a time.

I'm very happy with my Progress 2GS pillar drill (made in Peterborough). Spares were available in the late '90s or early 2000s from Gate, who appear to have picked up some of the pieces when the inevitable British Disease caused Elliott's demise.

Hmmm, not convinced this rotary table is anything to do with Elliot when EME Ltd are still trading. It stands for 'Electronic and Mechanical Engineers' , this 1970 advert from Graces Guide:

Still active, and I suspect the firm could still make you a rotary table if you offered them enough money!

Be interesting to know who and what Henry's table was made for: quite a strong hint in 'Specialists in Laboratory Testing Equipment' that it might be a particularly posh bit of kit.

Have a look at the lathes.co.uk pages for the Unimat and EME lathes. EME seem to be a subsidiary of B J Elliot of London and imported Emco machines and Taiwanese mills. I imagine that Taiwanese rotary tables as well as mills could have been imported. The style of the badge on Henry's rotary table looks similar to some of the unimat labels. Not that any of this means that the products were anything but high quality.

Now you can see the whole thing, yes it's in very nice condition, but the design of the body casting makes me think it's British, it has 'channels' down either side like mine, what I presume is for coolant to spill over the table and run down? I've never seen an import Rotary table with that feature?, I may be wrong, it's just something I noticed.
