      Hi everyone
New to the forum but have been tinkering around the 5 inch gauge world for a few years and am currently rebuilding a “Speedy” I acquired recently. Once she is ‘off shed’ I am looking to build a 5 inch gauge version of Maisie, are there drawings and castings available or will I have to scale up the maisie drawings?

      Cheers in advance!

          Hi Gary

You may struggle to get drawings. But l am rebuilding a 3.5" gauge Maisie and as part of that project have digitised LBSC's drawing into a 2D model. If you have suitable software you are welcome to a copy to scale up.

Also l can't see anything special or peculiar about the castings. You would just need to hunt around the 5" gauge suppliers for suitable substitutes. Good sources could be Flying Scotsman or Green Arrow. Identyfying the cylinders probably the trickiest. But ouside cylinder/inside steam chests of the right bore and stroke should be findable. The steam cheats coukd be cut from stock material anyway, they are pretty simple.

          Bruno.

Thank you for the replies, I’m sure one ofor these sets of drawings will provide a good starting point.

Bruno what would I require for your drawings programme wise?

If anybody else on this forum has a set of the Waverly North drawings or the Jersey Lilley they would like to dispose of I would be interested.

              Cheers again!

Gary, the drawing model is a dwg file which is an industry standard. I use Draftsight to draw with but TurboCad etcetera use the same format. If you pm me a can send you the drawing.

                Regards

                Bruno.

                  Hi Gary,

If you want a 5" Maisie then you are looking for a GNR atlantic. Blackgates have all of Clarksons of York drawings and most of the castings, and it will be a much more prototypical model than a scaled up LBSC Maisie.

You'll get told that Clarksons drawings are no good, but many excellent models have been built from them, you just some times have to join the dots.

                    Hi Eddie
That is exactly what I’m looking to build although as research has found they are rare in 5 inch gauge. It is going to be an interesting project with a fair bit of figuring out it seems!

                      Hi Gary,

The Blackgates Clarkson drawings and casting are the route to go by. The NRM have lots of drawings available, and there is a complete set of drawings for the LBSCR H2 Atlantic which devolved from the original Ivatt drawings, and which is being recreated in fullsize on the Bluebell Railway.

I have a GA from Doncaster of the Ivatt Atlantics as per Maisee, but LBSC took some liberties with his 3.5"g design.

I have not seen the Clarkson drawings but would imagine they are very accurate but not easy to interpret unless you have a lot of background knowledge.

W A (Bill) Carter built his 5"g Gold Medal winning example that won the top awards in 1967 and 1968 if you refer back to ME of this period. It was also a working miniature that proved itself on the track on the SMEE exhibition track for many years and at Beech Hurst.

I would also particularly recommend you acquire the RCTS LNER volume relevant to the large boilered GNR Atlantics and this will give you some appreciation as to the Richardson balanced slide valve version as to the later piston valve version.

                      Cheers,

                      Julian

Bill Carters engine was exceptional as is John Richardson's which won medals at Harrogate a few years ago. See ME Vol 212 No 4478 Page 430.

I would be very interested in seeing if anyone ever build the Maisie as a pacific, Curly did make mention of that in ME.

                            Hi all
Bit of progress in that I now have a set of the Clarkson drawings from Blackgates engineering (nice people and a prompt service) the drawings are good but a little lacking in detail so the next job is more research, thank you for the advice so far all very helpful

                            Cheers!
