        Hi

I have Dickson quick change tool holders and some of them are worn (old and came with the lathe) i.e. they can't be tightened to the post. I thought about shimming them and found that approximately 0.1mm to 0.2mm shim works (depending on holder).

I tried two types of epoxy. The problem was, I planned to trim the shim to exact size after gluing. I suspect my trimming vibrations (using a micromotor) ruined it. Cutting it to the exact size before gluing was a little difficult because it moved when gluing and I wanted to cover the maximum surface possible.

I think maybe some type of double sided tape would be ok for this? I even considered using low temp silver solder, flattening it and heating after tightening…. but double I can heat it enough, pretty thick to get there when tightened.

        Any suggestions?

        Thanks

Check that the cam which pulls the "tee nut" into the post is not worn or the nut itself, I doubt it is the actual tool holder.

Also if some of the tool holders are imports they sometimes need a bit grinding off the back as there is too much metal to allow the angled faces to seat against the post

I thought it could be the post but only the oldest holders that look worn have the problem. All the other holders work fine.

Plus one for the cam or the 'Top Hat' locking part that locks onto the T slot in the holders — this is probably easier to make than the cam ?

Another thought it also depends on where the tool post and the various holders were made, there is a considerable difference in dimensions of the cloned holders and tool post blocks.

I've got a standard four way tool post and have simply glued metal strip (gauge plate) to the bottom of a couple of indexable tool holders with Araldite.
