        Hi All,

Currently helping a pal out with his B&S surface grinder in exchange for being able to use it.

Have persuaded him to get the manual from lathes.co.uk which should be a great help.

Machine seems to work fairly well but some wwear apparent in the mechanism that regulates the y axis feed, does no always engage properly.

Also the main bed seems to bet quite stiff occasionally, I have had the bed off and thoroughjly cleaned and oiled all surfaces so this is a bit odd, any thoughts please?

The main oiling point at the front seems to empty very quickly and the inside cupboard gets very oily, could some of the oileways be blocked up causing friction?

Is the postion in which the main bed is relocated after removal critical? Have tried it starting on the rack and feeding in and also by placing down in mid position, no real difference?

Looks like being a fun project and good learning experience.

I am also unable to find a new diamond dresser for the wheels, the old one is ruined..

        Cheers, Martin

        Cheers

The diamond dressers in the for sale section might be suitable?

Try removing the rack and/or pinion, so the bed is not influenced by it. Then place the bed onto the machine and push it up and down by hand, you should be able to find if it is the bed/table that is binding or the rack and pinion that is causing the problem, which is what I suspect. Make sure you do not get any grinding dust on the ways, if you do oil should not go anywhere near it until you have removed any dust, use paper towelling wipe and throw, rag should not be used

One thing when your restoration is completed don't forget to grind the mag chuck, you will be amazed at the number of people who do not and then complain it will not grind parallel

The Y axis feed is controlled by a ratchet assembly fitted behind the hand wheel, possible problems with ratchet disk, pawl or pawl spring. I've had one of these machines sitting in the corner for years, just needs a few things doing to it.
