I’m planning on getting a face mill for my WM16 , and will probably get one of the selection from RDG tools which are either 40, 50 or 63 mm diameter. I’d be looking at facing aluminium. Given the size and capability of my machine does anyone have any feeling to the best size to get? (The manual says up to 63 mm, but I don’t want to overdo it!)

          Hi David,

I've used a 63mm 5 point face mill on the WM16 for a long time, it's perfectly alright with it so long as you keep the rpm high on large areas.(I've used it to face 2.5" square T6) I wouldn't go back to fly cutting, face mill greatly reduces the load on the cutter. I think mine also comes from RDG, i must've got the biggest one i could!  Definitely was a good buy i wont regret. I'd even consider one of the smaller ones for good measure.

The manual sounds correct as i'd say 95% of the time it works perfectly fine, but i'd definitely rule out some of the industrial sized ones.

            Hi David,

I too have a 63mm carbide tipped face mill and have used it even on my small Mini Mill. As long as the depth of cut is small and the speed is right I get a nice smooth surface. A 50mm face mill might be better suited for a small milling machine.

I made the mistake of thinking i had a 63mm face mill, i was wrong it's 72mm! perhaps i'm pushing my luck.

It can't possibly work with your mill. You'd better stop using it

I have a Seig SX3 which specifies a 50mm face cutter but it will run a 75mm diameter with light cuts.
