I am working on a spring driven motor, the large wheel has a diameter of 200 mm. It drives a first wheel in a governor that has pinion of 14 mm diameter with 12 teeth which is a new replacement made by someone in the past. It looks nicely made and works fine with the large wheel, problem I have with it that the pinion is not hardened, probably made of a free machining steel or similar. My question; is that OK or should I make a new pinion which is hardened and tempered, what do you think? Niko.

It may be the sacrificial loading point

If you toughen it up then the next part in the chain becomes the sacrificial loading point

If it's going to fail you may as well wait untill it does then throw it away and make another pinion. At least that way you have had some use out of it. Unless it is being sent into space or to some far away place where you cannot get to it, what have you got to lose.

Personally I think you are worrying over nothing.

            regards Martin

Ady1, Martin, thanks for your input. Agree that you can also exaggerate things which probably this is an example of. Niko.
