I know your problem, I'v got it too, arms too short, and legs too long. If you get to Boots (or similar) there are a range of stocking aids to help with getting socks and stockings on, even just having a look you might come up with something home made. The cheapest at Boots is 3 pound ninety, and the dearest 18 pound forty. The main problem I have is the elastic woven into the top of socks, it takes me about a hour to pick it out, I have Varicose vein problems, and tight socks are the last thing I need.

"Spent the last couple of days emailing and telephoning Macc models "

Ok. I made the comment because many people just send an email & then complain of no reply. My experience of emails is that they often get lost in the wash & a simple phone call often solves the problem. Clearly, in this case, that did not work either

You lot of sick'os remind me of a poem I had to recite at a charity event one night.

Took me ages to learn but once learned I have never forgotten it

Won't bore you with it all but some may remember the great Stanley Holloway:-

I've been very poorly, but now I feel fine.

I went out yesterday for the very first time.

I felt like a lad as i strode down the road.

Then up came old Jones & he said " Well I am blowed"

"My word you do look queer, My word you do look queer"

          I said " Don't say that , Its true I've been ill"

He said " I glad you are better but still, I wish there was a thousand for me in your will"

My word you do look queer. My word you do look queer"

I've been reading an old tome that I picked up from a second hand shop. "The Engineering Educator", published in 1928, has an interesting comment in the section on sensitive drilling machines: "a ½ inch hole can be drilled 1 inch deep in two seconds". Blimey. I'll not try that on my El-cheapo drill press!

I did one of my famous cock-ups.

Now that it's running well I removed the base-plate from the Pottymill engine I'm building to add a decorative chamfer around the edges.

Being me I cut perfect chamfers on the wrong side of the base-plate and created a mirror-image of what's actually needed. Yes it matters. Expletive deleted.

Today found one of the causes of the reduction in speed the new valve seat had bedded in with the red heat and reduced valve clearance which acted as a rev limiter with damage to the cam follower.

Typing this I'm having my elevenses, coffee and Eccles cakes, while the CNC mill churns out the third of the long rear spokes for my traction engines. Almost three down, only thirty-one to go. I'm not sure I can drink that much coffee.

Just received a muffle furnace from india a few days ago, got round to unpacking it, the whole unit is probably 1.5m squared, so there was alot of cardboard and polystyrene to remove.

removed a strange round 3 pin plug, and put a U.K one on it, everything works okay, a simple pole switch, l.e.d indicators and temperature control, one reading for actual temperature and another for the "target" temp. 1-900C working range. auto cut-out and cut-in for when a stable reading has been reached.

It states the dimensions of the heating chamber to be 9 x 4 x 4" but it's actually considerably deeper than that and the door is very substantial. Overall i'm quite happy with it, there was a small dink (1" area?) to the corner of it but it's had a long way to get here so i'm not fussed.

This marks the latest addition to my workshop, which has been preceded by an induction motor belt sander and propane gas and a suitable burner, which i'm hoping will add to my capabilities.

I want to create a kind of photo tour of the building as it is quite interesting, lots to oogle at and give enthusiasts an idea of whats possible to get quite easily. I may consider using a different photo hosting website because it'll undoubtedly clog up forum usage.

All, take care with infrared thermometers, the measurement is very dependent on the properties of the surface you are monitoring.

Bit of a problem there, no waistcoat or fob watch, although I recall having a tie somewhere. Must dig it out some time.

It'd be incredibly boring sawing and filing them. Darn hard work too, and I'm inherently lazy. They will be draw filed to get the final fit in the hub slots. Odd really, the slots were cut in one pass with a 1" slot drill, and a 1" slip gauge is a snug fit. The spokes measure 1.003". On the front spokes I twiddled the CAM parameters to get the correct fit. On the rears I reckoned it was just as easy to draw file on assembly. A thou or two will probably disappear when removing the annealing scale anyway.

I have a plan to hot form the rear strakes to get the shape I want, since rolling individual strakes hasn't worked. The press tools will be CNC milled of course.

All, take care with infrared thermometers, the measurement is very dependent on the properties of the surface you are monitoring.

Incidentally, Omega who are respected suppliers of IR and other temperature measurement equipment actually recommend (black) BBQ paint to ensure a consistent emissivity of 1.0. If you can tolerate black paint on your target, it's as good as any and is also good for red heat. However, most temperature controllers are already set up to take thermocouple inputs and are pretty accurate out of the box, probably more accurate than an ebay IR meter.

Incidentally, FLIR's range of IR thermal imaging / measurement cameras are now available for as little as £200. It's not so long ago that they cost as much as a house…

Some joker has posted a milling machine for sale without giving any contact details. And the link he provided requires you to be registered with the mig-welding forum to see it……
